I rewatched the play, and I don’t think the outcome was Collins’ fault. Once McDyess trapped him on the screen and Camby decided come out to block the 3 pt shot fake, Collins had to stay in front of Dice to avoid him rolling to the hoop for a layup.

Camby should have hung back and let Bubbachuck shoot the 3, which he wouldn’t have actually done. Iverson takes all of his game-winners from 6 to 11 feet from the basket, and one would think Camby would be familiar with his tendencies after the Denver experience…

The problem is that I don’t think Thornton has another gear to step it up to. Dude’s already 26yo.

Gordon is a keeper. Thornton, not so much.

But on the bright side, you get Thornton at rookie contract scale through when he’s 29yo. That was the brilliance of him as a draft pick – you basically get the prime of his career at rookie pay scale.

Bingo.

Though Camby’s mistake wasn’t biting on the shot fake so much as being out there in the first place.

Iverson wanted nothing to do with Camby all game long, which is why he was shooting almost exclusively from the perimeter. Iverson must have been the happiest guy in the arena when he saw Camby come out to defend on that play.

It’s easy to focus on Camby’s inability to defend on the ball in the post, and forget just how intimidating a defender against ball penetration he really is. I was watching Camby play while rooting for the opposing team for the first time in two years, and I was always worried where he was every time Stuckey, Prince, or Iverson slashed.

And kudos to Dunleavy on the defense on the play before Iverson’s goaltend. He correctly understood that the Pistons were going to Prince against Thornton in the corner, and had three defenders ready to stop it.
