Follow The Leader

Swagger.

At one time, it was an integral part of the Baron Davis persona. See how he lifted up his jersey and mean mugged around the court in that video? How he made the crowd go crazy? Had that extra lean in his step? That’s swagger right there. Hell, even the announcer caught some swagger by osmosis and defiantly asked viewers “Do you believe NOW?” and then proceeded to trash talk AK47 by telling him “Put THAT on your flat-top!” What a completely surreal moment; the ragtag Warriors winning a big playoff game, led by Baron Davis.

Bassy on Bassy

You can find videos of Thursday’s various press conferences — Craig Smith, Sebastian Telfair, Mark Madsen, and Mike Dunleavy — at the Clippers site.

I caught up with Telfair afterwards for TrueHoop:

No kid in the history of high school athletics saw his young career chronicled with more fanfare than Sebastian Telfair. Ian O’Connor’s The Jump, and Jonathan Hock’s documentary Through the Fire both captured Telfair’s senior year at Abraham Lincoln High School in Coney Island, where Telfair was preparing himself to be basketball’s next great phenom. Before Telfair ever suited up in an NBA uniform — he was drafted 13th overall by Portland in the 2004 draft — he’d already secured a ten eight-digit endorsement deal with Adidas, and appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated.

Griffin to Take it Easy

Posted by Kevin Arnovitz On July - 22 - 2009

From the Clippers’ release:

Los Angeles Clippers’ rookie forward Blake Griffin will spend the next three to four weeks resting a strain to his right shoulder which he incurred in the third game of the Clippers’ five game Las Vegas Summer League schedule last week. Griffin, named the League’s Most Outstanding Player, went on to average 19.2 points and 10.8 rebounds.

Griffin will maintain his normal lower body training and conditioning regimen, and will be further evaluated regularly. He was examined and diagnosed Tuesday by Clippers’ team physician Dr. Steven Shimoyama. A second examination today by Los Angeles-based specialist Dr. Lewis Yocum confirmed the earlier diagnosis and suggested protocol.

Who is Ramon Sessions?

I looked at Sessions for TrueHoop over the weekend. The post includes a short testimonial from Knicks assistant, Dan D’Antoni, who coached Sessions in AAU ball:

The player movement procession has slowed, as teams wait to see where the big dominoes fall. Where Lamar Odom lands will probably have an impact on the rest of the free agent (or, in Carlos Boozer’s case, “available player”) pool. In turn, that will determine approximately how much money the spenders have left to fill out their rosters.

Smith, Telfair and Sessions

  • The Minnesota deal does not preclude a Sessions acquisition. Those conversations will continue, according to sources on both sides of the discussions. The Clippers still hold a trade exception, which is a nice chip to have and gives them another way to structure any potential deal.
