Rasual Butler’s cap number was $4,045,000, but $100,000 of that was a bonus/incentive for “team achievements.” The Hornets, in turn, get that $4.045M as a trade exception.
The Clippers, meanwhile, absorb Butler using $3,945,000 of their $7.3M trade exception from the Randolph-Richardson deal. They don’t have to account for the $100,000 bonus/incentive in their cap number.
That leaves the Clips with a $3,355,000 trade exception.
For all practical purposes, the Clippers have now effectively moved Zach Randolph for Craig Smith, Mark Madsen, Sebastian Telfair, Rasual Butler, and a $3,355,000 trade exception.

Now that’s some stellar GMing. Dunleavy may not have a future as an NBA coach but definitely as a GM.
This move is better/smarter than all of Elgin Baylor’s moves combined in 20+ years. And people wonder why the Clippers were God awful for so long……

‘CHILD PLEASE!” Baylor is hands down, without question the worst GM in sports history. How many winning seasons did the Clippers have under his leadership? I rest my case. He might be a nice man and a great player but a 6 year old with a dart board could have done a better job.

Lol…let me guess, you must have watched the new Hard Knocks show with the Bengals. Anywho, I like the Butler pickup…he may not be a great player, but he’s a nice, needed addition to a team that needs depth. Maybe more important, this might light a fire under Thornton’s ass.
One more note…the Clippers finalized a new radio deal with KFWB 980 today.

No, this is not just ‘one transaction’ – it was the latest in a string of moves.
Also, I have no problem with the Z-Bo acquisition – we needed a low post player bad after EB bailed. He played hard for us from Day 1 and was our best player last year. I wish I could’ve said the same about Baron. In fact, Z-Bo would still be here if it wasn’t for us lucking into Griffin.

They’re still not going to make the playoffs. How does getting some decent backups and some cap space really help them. Yeah, I guess the trade is good, but who are the 2 people that are gonna get cut now? Novack, Ricky Davis and/or Madsen?
Ricky Davis was supposed to be the guy that shared time with Thorton. Who knows what will happen and what Dunleavy will do to drive the team apart.
People on the message boards were praising Dunleavy’s moves last year too.

GM Dunleavy made the best of bad situation last year. Bringing in Baron was clearly not his idea – it was a favor to Brand. When Brand bailed he couldn’t say, “well, I never wanted Baron so we’re gonna reneg on the deal!” Season ticket holders would’ve had a collective cow if he did that, for one. It’s also not Dunleavy’s fault that Baron pulled a Jenny Craig stunt and decided to quit on this team less than 10 games into the season. It also wasn’t his fault that Rick Davis’ knees went to shit and he couldn’t play/shoot worth a damn. Getting rid of Thomas, who was worthless, and Mobley for a 20/10 guy like Randolph was a no-brainer and helped the team. We played .500 ball with Zach before Voskuhl took him out for 2 months. Bottom line: Last year was the perfect shitstorm for us and everything that could possibly go wrong did – except for the fact that we drafted Gordon and Jordan.

It’s not like he came into a new situation. These are Dunleavy’s players. Dunleavy picked them. Dunleavy screwed up the negotiations. It is Dunleavy’s fault because he’s the GM. They used to be a playoff team. Yeah, injuries… Maybe Dunleavy shouldn’t get a bunch of players that are injury prone. It also doesn’t take a genius to figure out most of the players Dunleavy got don’t fit into his system.

Dunleavy is the worst coach in the NBA and an average GM at best. As a coach, he runs the same play over and over which never works. He makes ZERO in-game adjustments and ALWAYS loses his team after halftime. Its like he bores them to sleep and they spend the 3rd quarter waking back up. He does not coach to his players strenths, rather forcing them to adhere to his “system” which is antiquated and ineffective. His player conditioning is atrocious which is why we have so many injuries and why the team falls off in the 2nd half continuously. Good coaches make good players look great and average players look good. Dunleavy makes good players look average and average players look atrocious.

Who says they’re not? This team is solid 1-10. SF was the weakest position and now they’ve filled that hole with a guy who can both defend the position and hit threes. Exactly what they needed. Camby, Kaman, Griffin and DeAndre Jordan are perhaps the best collection of big men (outside the Lakers) in terms of on court production and potential. Davis has been working hard this summer (has his new shoes in China to sell) and Gordon is one year more experienced. The last couple of spots in the West are up for grabs. One injury to the Hornets will expose how paper thin they are now. The Suns are placing a lot of hope on Amare being healthy and 04-ish. The Warriors have plenty of talent, but a unorthodox coach. The Rockets are without Yao, McGrady, Artest and Von Wafer for that mater. The Thunder could be really good, but they’re young and lacking in big-man depth. I just think the Clips have a great shot this year. And for all the talk about New YOrk and NJ and Chicago, who wouldn’t want to play in Staples with this young crop of talent? If Lebron was smart, he’d come out West and share a building with Kobe. I mean, the Clips do need a small forward…

I think with their easy first half schedule they’ll get some confidence and end up at about 35-40 wins. Baron Davis is never going to work well in Dunleavy’s system. Then you got 2 very young players with Gordon and Griffin. Kaman will miss half the year and he played like crap last year anyway.

I keep watching and in a sense, brain washing myself by 6 or 7 games on my HD dvr. When the Clippers played hard and hustled on defense, they could hang with any team. Plenty of offense on this squad, When Baron makes his shots and drives to the rim, teams will have a hard time stopping him.

Two things:
1) Elgin Baylor was a damn hack any way you slice it.
2) Dunleavy has had ONE above average PG since he’s been here: Cassell. Everybody else has been abysmal to forgettable; Baron was pathetic last year and it wasn’t Dun’s fault. Livingston was a physical trainwreck. Sessions will be just fine as a Clipper if we can get him.

I think KA fails to state the best result of the Zbo deal: it freed up a starting position and more minutes for Griffin.
Addition by subtraction.
JM Reply:
August 12th, 2009 at 11:49 pm
I don’t think KA failed to state anything. He lists the net assets gained by swapping out Randolph’s contract. Yes, playing time for BG and chemistry are nice. But instead of being merely salary dumped, Randolph was traded for some actual value.
More than addition by subtraction, it’s transitive value of inequalities:
Randolph < Richardson+TE < Telfair+Smith+Madsen+Butler
Jax Reply:
August 13th, 2009 at 9:20 am
Um, I wasn’t criticizing KA. Relax. The point is, in my opinion, that the best part of the trade in addition to the salary dump is that Griffin can start and get more minutes and the chemistry issues you mentioned. No one thought that MDSr would be able to pull off such an essential trade with ZBo’s albatross contract and reputation involved. (Which is why so many of us thought that bringing him here in the first place was such a disaster.)
Again, the key aspect of the ZBo trade was addition by subtraction / salary dump, “transitive value of inequalities” notwithstanding.

For all those dunleavy haters shut the f&@$ up already this guy coached arguably the best clipper team we’ve had in 05-06. The following year we barely missed out on the playoffs. And the following year we were without EB for pretty much all year, cassell quit on us who could blame him and at times our best big was Tim Thomas do u have any idea how frustrating that must have been? before the playoff year we had bobby simmons and Quentin Richardson and EB and an injured maggette come on peeps dunleavy has done a great job considering the talent he’s had just look at it this way how many good point guards has he had?
cassell, and Davis I guess. And bad guards? Marko jaric , Livingston, brunson, hart, brevin knight, Fred jones, Lionel chalmers, mardy Collins, yeah those have all been starters for us ask any coach to try and have a winning record after 6 years with these guys.
Jax Reply:
August 13th, 2009 at 9:26 am
The fact that many of us think MDSr is a horrible coach doesn’t make us haters. Quickly, he’s sub .400 in his six year tenure here. He’s had one year with a winning record. That year, Cassell took over. I demand more from a coach making $5 Million a year. Maybe some of you don’t.
The following year we would have had a winning record and made the playoffs but he stubbornly played Corey off the bench, when the only other consistent scorer on the team was EB. That killed us. I’m highly confident KA would agree with me on that. Once they finally installed Corey in the starting lineup the team played better and almost made the playoffs.
Your argument that he didn’t have sufficient talent is ludicrous because he’s been the de facto GM of the team for the past six years. That’s on him too.
MDSr’s iso offense is not a dynamic offense that in my opinion involves the team. It’s also highly predictable and easy to defend. Last year he absolutely lost the team.

We’ve gotten better. Still we have decent players other teams want.
1. Baron Davis: Likely suiters- Lakers & GSW.
2. Marcus Camby: Likely suiters- Spurs, Dallas, NY, Celtics.
3. Chris Kaman: Likely suiters- Dallas, Phoenix, GSW, Houston.
4. Ricky Davis: Any team. What a waste!
5. Al Thornton: Likely suiters: Atlanta, Orlando, Miami.

980 kinda surprised me a bit, I kinda thought that 570 would go after the Clips after losing the Lakers to 710. I do know that those Laker-loving idiots over at Channels 2 and 9 (co-owned with 980 by CBS) will be forced to promote Clipper radio broadcasts on KFWB, much like they did when KFWB had the Dodgers. Outside of UCLA sports and the Chargers, 570 is all national now, they’re carrying national NFL games alongside the Chargers. Maybe they’ll move the Kings from sister station 1150 to 570, so they can say they’re carrying a local professional sports team (yeah I know it’s hockey and the Kings have been rebuilding as long as their current Clippers).

You can’t understand Elgin Baylor as GM without understanding that Sterling did not give him the breathing room he’s given Dunleavy. A big difference. Sterling deep in his 7os may suddenly be thinking about “adjusting” his despicable and deserved reputation ie legacy. As to Dunleavy being great GM for 6 years – Koralev, personally lost Elton Brand, had to be restrained from trading Maggette and now making deal with AI. Bet Olshey a major contributor. Dunleavy has shown his eyes too big for his coaching ability. But I can take the GM, I think, but expect problems as coach after short honeymoon. Hope Mr. Stupid (Sterling) doesn’t extend MDsr’s deal, Sterling invariably extends his coaches when all around him are screaming Nooooo. That’s only reason Mike is still here.

What exactly does Sterling being cheap have to do with drafting horrible players for literally 20 years straight like Elgin did? – There was hardly anybody worth keeping whom Baylor had drafted. Except for Manning, Elgin failed to draft even ONE all-star level player in all his years. That means he was an EPIC FAILURE at his job. Dunleavy has picked a couple of duds, too, especially Korolev, but Baylor is in a league all his own when it comes to misjudging young talent. Good riddance to that senile fool. I hope Sterling trashes that pathetic ingrate in court when EB’s racism/ageism lawsuit goes to trial.

Let’s get the facts straight Stian, shall we? Or are you MDSr.
MDSr’s been the GM for the past six years by contract. He and Sterling engaged in a charade where Baylor was the figurehead GM (black figurehead) while they ran the show. They lied to you, me, and everyone else. Except that the league knew about it and Elton’s agent Falk finally exposed the truth last summer.
MDSr’s record as GM the past six years? Sub .400. One playoff appearance. One year with a winning record (and that just barely).
Only the Clippers would keep such a loser on.
Your allegations about Baylor, who was not allowed to do anything, are beyond the pale. Yes, Baylor participated in the charade too, but give me a break. MDSr is a complete loser for his active participation for five years in a charade involving one of the best former players in the NBA. While we can feel sorry for Elgin, it’s difficult to feel sorry for the loser who manipulated us all.

Baylor got us Lamar Odom, Elton Brand and Corey Maggette. That alone made me respect the man. For the first time in history, we actually matched a deal for a free agent and retained Elton and Corey. The first time I really believed in this team was during the 2001 season. Sure Darius ended up fizzling out, but it was an exciting time when he was our rookie. My best memories are not from 2006, but from 2001. I loved that team. Even Sean Rooks made me cheer. I loved seeing Corey singlehandedly beat the Lakers in the 4th quarter in the span of 5 minutes. The Gentry/Baylor years were actually some of the best this team has produced even though they werent winning or going to the playoffs, you still wanted to watch those young guns get out and run.

To be truthful, Sterling HAD to match those deals in order to meet minimum payroll which was like 30 mio. at the time. We needed those contracts on the books to get above the threshold. To give Elgin credit for any of this is misguided.
