The Blake Griffin Treatment

Posted by Kevin Arnovitz On October - 27 - 2009

Stimulation and Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP), according to the Clippers:

Los Angeles Clippers’ rookie forward Blake Griffin suffered a non-displaced stress fracture of his left patella during the Clippers’ last preseason game vs. the New Orleans Hornets on Friday, October 23rd.

Griffin, who underwent an MRI yesterday which confirmed the diagnosis, was examined by both team physician Dr. Steven Shimoyama as well as specialist Dr. Neal ElAttrache. Based on communication between the two physicians, it has been determined that Griffin will be sidelined for approximately six weeks.

More Thoughts on Blake Griffin

From my TrueHoop post on the subject:

With all the athletic superlatives being thrown Blake Griffin’s way since his explosive Summer League debut in July, it’s easy to miss what he represents most profoundly to fans of the Los Angeles Clippers. For everything they’ve heard about Griffin’s athleticism, his ability to prowl the paint, and his capacity to pick up things like NBA defenses and an outside stroke in an instant, his allure has never been about those attributes.

To the Clipper faithful, Griffin personifies the deeper idea that change can occur instantly…

Griffin Could Miss up to Six Weeks

From the Clippers release:

Los Angeles Clippers’ rookie forward Blake Griffin may miss up to six weeks with a stress fracture of his left patella suffered during the Clippers’ last preseason game vs. the New Orleans Hornets on Friday, October 23rd.

Further information regarding Griffin’s course of treatment will be made available later.

It’s easy to frame this injury as the product of some paranormal force working against the franchise. I don’t care much for superstition. Here’s what Griffin’s injury means on a more practical level:

Blake Out?

Looks like that frontcourt depth is going to come in handy from outset.

After being named the likely starter in the Clippers’ opener prior to Friday night’s preseason game against New Orleans, Blake Griffin is questionable for Tuesday after injuring his knee on this play:

Marcus Camby is nursing an ankle sprain, though the prognosis on his injury has improved since Friday.  If neither Camby nor Griffin were able to start Tuesday night, the candidate pool at the 4 would be reduced to Craig Smith and DeAndre Jordan. Alternatively, Mike Dunleavy could elect to slide Al Thornton over to power forward and play Rasual Butler at small forward.

Yes We Can!
The sun is out. The seas have parted. The basketball gods are shining upon us!

Although it’s impossible to root for the Los Angeles Clippers without some measure of faith, one thing is certain: Clipper fans don’t believe in saviors. Benoit Benjamin, Danny Ferry, Reggie Williams, and Michael Olowokandi helped retire that gospel.
