More on Coaching Change

Posted by Kevin Arnovitz On February 4, 2010 at 3:37 pm

More from the Clippers:

In defining the move, Dunleavy said, “I’ve had several conversations with our owner (Donald T. Sterling) concerning what we think is best for the team overall. We have discussed the possibility of my concentrating only on Basketball Operations. That option has always been available to me.”

Dunleavy continued, “I’ve come to the conclusion that this is the ideal time for me to direct my efforts toward the many personnel opportunities that lie before us, such as the trade market, the Draft and the free agent process. We fully expect to be active and productive on all those fronts.”

Roeser stated, “We fully agree with Mike that this is the right time to make this change. It just seems clear that the team needs a fresh voice and we hope that our players will respond in a positive way. As we approach the trade deadline, the NBA Draft and the upcoming Free Agent period, our team is very well-positioned from a salary cap standpoint. Mike’s experienced input will be vitally important as we continue to develop our young talented nucleus and shape our team’s future.”

My top choices for next year’s coach: Lawrence Frank, Byron Scott, Jeff Van Gundy, but honestly…this team needs the fire of Sam Cassell! Bring back SAM I AM!

Second tier: Sam Mitchell, Brian Shaw and Reggie Theus (who got a bum deal in Sac).

Mdsr’s coaching tenure started well….it just went on too long. Glad it’s finally worked out.

I like Lawrence Frank or Sam Mitchell.

The only one I like and think is perfect for this job is Jeff Van Gundy.

With the exception of Byron all the other coaches need more experience and Byron and Baron didnt get along well in NO. Its what eventually moved Baron to GS.

  17. d.han Said,

I think this is a legitimate step toward landing a big name free agent next year. As bad as the team has been on the court, Dunleavy has done a good job as GM, puting the clips in good position to be very competitive on the market this season. Perhaps he was smart enough (honest with himself) to know that remaining the head coach would hinder alot of those big names this summer.

I also think Kim Hughes is just a temporary filler until they get closer to signing a key free agent in the off season. That, or go after any of those coaches mentioned above after the all star break and make a statement about how bad they want a big name player this summer.

Unlike many in this economy, Dunleavy still has a job, and no apparent loss of income. You may disagree, but I think his best talents are as GM. I am EXTREMELY happy to see this move, and the timing is perfect (trade deadline 2 weeks, FOCUS Mike). See what Kim can do now and next…?

No Van Gundy!!! Clueless, formulaic, predictable offense. No Byron Scott, either, please. Maybe give Lawrence Frank a try. Wish we would have fired Dunleavy and hired Rick Adelman a few years ago when he was available.

  20. Ric Caric Said,

I’m not sure Dunleavy has been that great of a GM either. He has accumulated several parts that look good separately but I doubt Dunleavy’s coaching has been the only reason they haven’t meshed. B. Davis, Kaman, Gordon, and Camby all have strong abilities but also have weaknesses that can become significant liabilities when things aren’t firing. Maybe Blake Griffin is good enough to cover up a lot of these problems if/when he starts playing full time. But it seems more likely that Dunleavy is only good enough as a general manager to get himself fired as coach. That’s not good enough..

  21. d.han Said,

I think he’s been a very good GM. All they need is an “elite” NBA player, and one of the handful available this year will be a great fit. The Clippers do have solid guys, but none of them (even Baron) is “that” guy. They are all really 2nd/3rd option players. Sam-I-am was “that” guy, and look how well they did with him.

Whether Dunleavy is a great GM will be seen this summer.

  22. Jerdog Said,

Thanks, Mike, for everything you have done to turn this franchise around since you got here. Most people on this blog weren’t part of the dog-day Clipper years during the late 80s and 90s. Gotta like his comment during a recent interview that this is a man’s game. Kaman, Gordon, take note.

BTW, Gordon is too short and is over-rated. Can’t finish, dribble, make good decisions, or rebound. Taller players post him up. Since he has trouble making free throws, gotta question his shooting ability, too.

  23. Robert Lehrer Said,

Jerdog, the TEAM plays much better with Gordon than without Gordon in the lineup. Gordon can drive and shoot, so he keeps defenses honest. He’s the only guard on the Clips in the last two years who plays good D.

There are a lot of teams who’d love to have EG. EG is the least of the Clippers’ problems right now.

  26. LexiconDevil Said,

No one has been more down on Dunleavy than me, but I find this ironic. Doing this when and how he has done it, Dunleavy has done something very positive for the team. He actually had done a better job coaching this year (though not great). He seemed to be loosening the reins by allowing a big personality like John Lucas to join the staff and allowing Baron to play with a little more flow. Despite our record, Dunleavy is not leaving the cupboard bare for the new coach. Any top flight coach would like to go to battle with this squad, especially with Blake coming back next season. If they make the right hire and Dunleavy makes the right off season moves, the future could be incredibly bright.
