The Los Angeles Clippers today acquired guard Steve Blake, forward Travis Outlaw and cash considerations from the Portland Trailblazers in exchange for Marcus Camby.
Blake, 29, is in his seventh NBA season and is averaging 7.6 points, 4.0 assists and 2.0 rebounds in 51 games in 2009-10. In his career, the former University of Maryland star has appeared in 470 NBA games, making 289 starts with career averages of 7.6 points, 4.2 assists and 2.6 rebounds. Originally drafted in the second round (38th overall pick) of the 2003 NBA Draft by the Washington Wizards, Blake is a career 39 percent three-point shooter and has played for a total of five teams, spending time with the Milwaukee Bucks and Denver Nuggets as well as the Wizards and Trailblazers.
Outlaw, 25, was drafted by Portland with the 23rd overall pick in the 2003 NBA Draft and has been limited to 11 games this season after undergoing surgery to repair a stress fracture of the fifth metatarsal in his left foot on Nov. 18, 2009. Currently fourth on the Blazers in scoring in 2009-10 averaging 9.9 points per game, the six-foot-nine forward has appeared in 377 career NBA games, starting 26 with career averages of 9.9 points, 3.5 rebounds and 0.7 assists.
Camby leaves the Clippers in the midst of his second season with the club after coming to Los Angeles in a trade with Denver on July 15, 2008. A 13-year NBA veteran and former NBA Defensive Player of the Year, Camby has appeared and started in 51 games for L.A. this season, averaging 7.7 points and 12.1 rebounds – the second highest total in the league.
In a related roster move, the Clippers also waived combo guard Ricky Davis.
Davis, 30, in his 12th NBA season is averaging 4.4 points, 1.6 rebounds and 1.1 assists in 36 games in 2009-10.
The acquisition of Outlaw and Blake required the Clippers to waive one of their 16 players to get below the roster size limit of 15. Veteran swingman Ricky Davis was the odd man out, and will now look to catch on with a playoff contender down the stretch run.
The cash considerations in the trade are reported to be around 3 million dollars, but that has yet to be confirmed. We’ll have updates on that as soon as possible.

“We knew Camby was gone as soon as Dunleavy retired to the front office. But for this? No prospects, no draft picks, the same amount of expiring money that Camby was going to provide had he stayed on? Just a little cash thrown Sterling’s way? It’s pathetic. It’s so damn Clipper-y. I hate that. You should, too.” – Kelly Dwyer, from Ball Don’t Lie

Oh I see, Dunleavy is trying to destroy the franchise now that he’s on his way out.
I just may be jumping on the fire Dunleavy buss.

Can we pin this on dts? Dts loves money and hates to spend it
Posted on February 16th, 2010 at 11:39 am
if ANything, dunleavy is trying to kiss sterling’s ass by making him some extra cash that doesn’t add up to anything beneficial (sp?) towards the team’s progress. Let’s face it, dunleavy wants to stick around as long as he can even beyond 2011, I’m not sure if this is such a good idea.
Posted on February 16th, 2010 at 11:40 am
The Dunce also wants to make sure the team does worse without him as coach.
Posted on February 16th, 2010 at 11:44 am
Well I guess with that extra $3 million everyone in the front office will get their season-ending bonuses.
Sigh.

And in the LA Times….
“I know we don’t have the best record,” Camby said of the Clippers. “I know we’re not where we want to be as a team. But my family loves the situation. My wife, my kids love the school system. But you can’t control it.”
Even though the Clippers have lost eight of nine games to fall a season-worst 10 games under .500, Camby said the situation wasn’t as bad as it might seem.
“I like our guys,” he said. “I like our coaching staff. Players, we’re real close. We’re like distant brothers. So I would love to be here.”

The *only* bright spot in this trade is waiving Ricky Davis. Otherwise, a whole lot of nothing in return for what should have been a prime trade asset.

I still feel that Thornton and/or Telfair will be traded before Thursday’s trade deadline. Hopefully, Dunleavy isn’t done making deals.

Thank you, Marcus Camby. Thank you from the bottom of my destroyed and mangled heart. For never letting down, for always playing your heart out, for being our glue, for making me forget EB so quickly and for being genuinely upset that you got trade away from the Clippers. Something unheard of. I really hope that if all fails this offseason, you’ll resign, show Blake Griffin a thing or two and retire a Clipper. I’ll buy you that steak dinner you weren’t allowed to enjoy when you get back to LA.

Same. Good luck the Rest of the year in Portland, and we’ll give you the ovation you deserve when you come back. Hope to see you back here with the Clips next year.

Please Marcus, Come back to us.
Stay in a hotel or a condo for 5 months and come back – no biggie.
“The Glue” is an understatement. You are “The Cement”.

Well said Juicebox. Clippers finally have a good player who WANTS to be here, and they trade him, ugh! Bye, Marcus, thanks for the memories…

While we could have probably packaged Camby with Thornton or Telfair (Preferably Telfair) to open our roster up to offer a max contract at the end of the season to a FA and get a pick out of the deal, I don’t think this was a terrible trade.
We’ve been needing a quality back-up PG, we get that in Blake; and we’ve been wanting a SF; we get to see how Outlaw does when he comes back from injury.
Similarly, Camby gets to go to Portland, play in the playoffs, and becomes a FA in less roughly three or four months. If we really want him back, and he really wants to stay in LA, then a deal can be made to bring him back to the Clips.

I think Camby will stay in Portland. He said he’s happy to be there. He wants to be where he is wanted and he is DEFINITELY wanted in Portland. By the fans AND the management team. Paul Allen takes care of his players so hopefully Camby will be happy and well treated. And he will get to play in the post season..playoffs. Got to be happy for him right?

he will not have a spot next year with oden ($6.8 mil) and pryzybilla ($7.5 mil) coming back. they still have aldridge and are excited about cunningham’s potential. hopefully we can bring him back.

Trade makes no sense… Blake is a decent PG, and Outlaw is probably gone for the year with a broken foot. I really think the Clips could have gotten a much better haul for trading Camby. Perhaps a trade to Philly for Iggy and Dalembert, with the Clips giving up Camby, Thornton, Ricky, and Mardy (like so many of you posters suggested). Call me an idiot, but maybe Dunleavy is trying to stay on Camby’s good side by trading him to a playoff contender in hopes of resigning him for the offseason. Portland, after all, is a great city to play ball and is not too far away from his family in LA. Either way, Dunleavy owes Camby a nice steak dinner. He must’ve been PISSED to leave a big, hearty, juicy steak on the plate. I mean, my gf could admit to cheating on me and eventually breaking up with me over the phone, and I’ll stick around to finish that meal.
Going to miss seeing 23 on the floor. Classy, hard working player who used the most of his modest talent. Will root for him and the Blazers to push deep into the playoffs.

I think Outlaw will play starting at the end of this month. He was slotted to start playing for Portland on 2/21. He is athletic and a clutch shooter. He was very popular among the Trailblazers. He is Brandon Roy’s best friend. Roy is sad that he was traded.
The Blazers needed a center BADLY or they wouldn’t have traded either Blake or Outlaw. And that is with log jams at both of these 2 positions. So both players were valued and it’s the expiring contracts that called their numbers more than anything…and the need for a center.

We’ll miss you Marcus. You are a true professional. Enjoy the playoffs. Come back next year, help us get to the playoffs and be the best mentor for Blake that I can think of.

I do not think we are so bad comparing what the Nuggets did to him. He did not want to play for the Clippers, In fact, he did not participate in any preseason game last season.

As a Portland native and Blazer fan, I wasn’t sure what we were getting with Camby, so I thought I’d check out the Clipper blogs to feel out the sentiment. He sounds like an upstanding guy and everyone knows we need the help in the middle until prizbilla and oden come back next season. While I’m not gonig to miss steve blake too much as we’re deep in his position, I will sincerely miss outlaw. He is a consistant bomber and before he injured himself this season, he was the leading bench scorer in the league. Both Blake and Outlaw are awesome, selfless, team players and will bring consistant play and positive attitudes. Camby will be available this summer, and hopefully you can sign him for a more modest amount if he truly wants to get back to LA.
We’ll see how things turn out tonight. See you at the Rose Garden!

Also a Blazer fan. I agree with this post. However, I hope that Marcus stays in Portland. He sounds like a great guy and a smart player. He also defends!!!! Which is HUGE. I’m happy to hear he will be missed. I’m sure he will appreciate this. Just know that he will be treated very well here and be very much appreciated here also!
Marcus used to play with Andre Miller in Denver and also played with Juwan Howard so he will hopefully feel at home soon.

Does anyone realize we don’t have a healthy contributing backup pg? Our bench is one of the worst in the league because they can’t score, mainly because no pg. I love Camby but he is a full grown man and you are lucky to play in the nba for as long as he has and can do whatever he wants with his kids and as an nba player u can be traded anytime. I’m sure his kids are fine with their dad making 10 mil a year, hmmm they sure got it rough. Kaman is an all star, blake is #1 draft pick, DJ is a big man of the future, and rhino is a beast. Look at our other players baron -great passer but inconsistant scorer, EJ – still developing, Thornton – great in spurts but always has to create his own shot, Butler – needs open shots to score, plays a lot with the bench where no one can find him open shots. I mean we need a quality backup pg and blake is that, he started a lot in portland. These assets have long term value, while camby has got waaay too many miles to warrant any kind of young potential going to the clips. All contenders aren’t going to move young guys or picks for camby, and teams with good young players don’t need an old center. The blazers r in a rare situation where they need a center and have talent to trade and we took advantage. This move makes sense for our offense and frees up DJ and that makes me interested in a season that has been very disheartening.

When are we in the Clipper Nation going to stop being the losers we know we are and start thinking and conducting ourselves as winners? Why are we always giving away and letting go good players? There is a reason we have been the lauging stock of the NBA for so many years and this is a great example! We have just given up on this season and it’s only half over! All I read and hear is we are thinking of the future, but why can’t we win right now? Why didn’t we package Davis and Thornton/Telfair instead of waving Davis, trying to shop Thornton by himself and GOD knows what we are going to do with Telfair. Why give away or best defensive player and rebounder for cap space when at the end of the season, no good player is going to want to sign with us?
Why do we in the Nation stand for this? Dunleavy needs to address the Nation. This is not acceptable.

No way Camby comes back in the off-season because of the way the organization handled this trade. Had they approached him first and said re-signing him in the summer is their goal, possibly. But the way Camby found out is going to spur him to give the Clips the middle-finger IF they do indeed extend an offer in July.

This is decent leverage for the clippers if camby really wants to come back. No offense but he’s not worth 9+ million. He is 35, and if he is desperate to get home to LA we may be willing to take less in the summer to get bak to LA.
Posted on February 16th, 2010 at 2:52 pm
This is a good trade if only because we waived Ricky Davis.
Posted on February 16th, 2010 at 3:56 pm
I will look back on this trade as a great trade if the following happens…
1) Dunleavy trades Al Thornton for a draft pick. Telfair opts out of his last year.
2) Donald Sterling wants to open his check book and get a big name in the off-season to fill the 3
3) In addition, Clips are able to sign a healthy Travis Outlaw regardless over the cap space due to trade rules. He can fit in the rotation.
Now you have Baron-EJ-Big name 3-BG-Kaman with Outlaw, an experienced Deandre, and Rhino (hopefully) on the bench
If this is what Dunleavy/Sterling had in mind then I am ok. If not there better be a good plan B or else that was dumb.
