Clippers 98, Charlotte 94

Posted by D.J. Foster On February - 23 - 2010

Larry Brown’s Charlotte Bobcats are an incredibly scrappy team. They play in your face defensively, fly all around the court, and hit the glass with reckless abandon. They fight, they hustle, and they grind out wins. Not surprisingly, their star player goes by the nickname of “Crash”. Basically, the Bobcats are a nasty bunch.

So what does a win against a tough Charlotte team say about the new look Clippers?

A few quick thoughts from the 98-94 win over Charlotte:

  • The Bobcats play a brand of basketball that isn’t pretty, but tonight was a particularly ugly affair. Bodies were flying everywhere, loose ball battles were vicious, and hardly any drives to the rim resulted in clean looks. This was a junkyard battle, and the fact that the Clippers out-nastied one of the nastiest teams in the league is impressive. The Clippers won the battle on the offensive boards (15-10) and posted a +14 overall rebounding margin. The loose ball hustle and the work on the boards were huge tonight.

What would Eric Gordon look like if he were quicker, 3 inches taller, and a better ballhandler? Surely he’d look like a perennial All-Star with an unstoppable offensive game. Surely he’d resemble the recurring player that pops up in all of Mike Dunleavy’s better dreams. But do you know what this hypothetical monstrous version of Gordon would really look like?

He’d look just like Tyreke Evans.

A few notes from the Clippers 99-89 victory:

  • Kim Hughes gets on the board tonight with the first victory of his NBA head coaching career. There are still issues at play with the Clippers increase in pace (24 turnovers tonight), but Hughes runs some really fantastic halfcourt sets down the stretch. The quarter starts off rough with Mardy Collins going one on one in isolation against Andres Nocioni [10:11, 4Q], but once Eric Gordon checks back in Hughes’ playcalling shines. The flair screens, the double-down screens, the dribble weaves — all specifically designed to get the ball in Eric Gordon’s hands. Kim Hughes has previously mentioned that Kaman wears down once the 4th quarter rolls around, so credit Hughes for making Kaman a secondary option down the stretch instead of constantly feeding him on the block.
