Dissecting the Side-Screen Roll Since 2006

Sofo Saves the Day

I can tell the morale around these parts is a little low…getting blown out by the Warriors will certainly do that to you. I think I’ve got something that might cheer you all up though. Courtesy of Citizen Ming over at ClipsNation, here’s a ten minute montage of our favorite Greek center absolutely wrecking house. Don’t have time for the whole thing? Skip ahead to about the 8:30 mark and have yourself a good laugh. Go ahead. You deserve it.

What is the proper analogy? I hate to only compare him to fat guys but (if the buffet fits) is he closer to Eddy Curry, Stanley Roberts, or Shaq? Is he a 6’10″ Rhino? Is he a 6’10″ Hot Plate? Seems amazingly athletic and nimble for his size, which is another way of saying that for 6’10″ he plays well below the rim. I’ve always had a soft spot for shot blockers and if nothing else you’d have to figure he could channel that girth into rebounding and dirty work. (Not one highlight by my recollection of him rebounding – any known issues?)

What are the chances that he’ll be a Clip next year? Might be worth a shot.

Is this guy EVER going to put on a Clipper uniform? Seems we’ve been talking about him for years and he looks physically ready at this point, i.e. not as fat as he was.

seriously…i second this question. What hasn’t be been brought over? Is it because he doesn’t want to sign and play for the clips? This guy has been developing long enough in the euroleague. He needs to get nba development before he gets too close to 30 and has minimal years left.

If they don’t bring him over this summer, this organization is really sad.

Just bad timing – when he was ready to come over around 2006, the Clippers frontcourt was pretty set and they didn’t need him. After that, he put on a ton of weight and wasn’t good enough for the Clips to bring over. This Summer he wanted to play for the Clips in Vegas, but instead decided to stay overseas where he’s still on contract. Just recently he’s worked himself into the best shape of his career, and the Clippers have only 5 guys on contract next season.

According to a lot of people that have had chances to watch him play live, he looks better than he ever did before. I believe he has one year left on his contract with Olympiakos, but he’s shown the desire to come and try out the NBA before. I’d be surprised if we don’t see him in Summer league this year.

They tried to bring him to the summer league last year, but there’s some NBA rule that you can’t bring people on a euro contract to summer league.

He has lost a lot of weight as of late. The most recent shots are at the end of the video where he is wearing the blue uniform.

He looks solid, but he definitely doesn’t fit the system.

what system would that be? as of right now, next season’s team has no system. Not until there is a new head coach named, because we all know kim hughes has no chance of the job, and rightfully so.

So to say Sofo doesn’t fit system is premature. We need a strong big body in the paint to defend and rebound, no matter if they use a small ball approach or not. And with kaman and blake as the starters, its not like Sofo would be playing so much of the minutes that he’d hinder the offense.

  11. avatar rod Said,

A couple of days ago Sofo said in a Greek newspaper that it is very likely he will come to the Clippers this summer. He is in the best shape of his life (which may not mean much considering how fast he was even a year ago) and his contract with Olympiakos runs out this season, so I don’t think it’s just talk. However, it’s been seven years since he was drafted; therefore he is no longer constrained by the rookie contract scale and negotiations will not be easy, as he will be a pretty hot name in Europe this summer (especially if Tiago Splitter signs with the Spurs). The fact that he is currently playing for one of the richest clubs in world (his teammates include Josh Childress and Linas Kleiza) further complicates matters, at least financially.

BTW you should be able to watch him at the Euroleague final four in May (probably via ESPN 360 or NBA TV). Olympiakos qualified last week, beating Aseco Prokom, a Polish team featuring Qyntel Woods and Daniel Ewing, who was great throughout this series. Sofo had a rough series, but he was great in the deciding game, with 12 points and 7 boards.

This season, aside from staying in shape, he has improved his free throw shooting, which has helped his offensive game a lot, considering how often he gets fouled. He has also cut down on silly fouls and emerged as a true defensive force for his team, especially in pick and roll situations.

On the other hand he is not a good defensive rebounder, lacks the length to block or alter many shots and even though his footwork is great, his offensive game is quite raw (i.e. he outmuscles everyone, establishes deep position and finishes with a dunk or a short hook). But I guess he could be a great energy guy off the bench for the Clippers, provided he continues to work on his conditioning and works on his moves 3 ft away from the basket.
