ESPN.com’s Chris Sheridan has this dispatch from Day 2 of Team USA training camp:
Reporters were allowed to watch the final 20 minutes of practice, and we can tell you from that small sampling that Stephen Curry looked a whole lot better than Eric Gordon, who he is presumed to be battling with for a spot on the final 12-man roster. Gordon briefly ran the point and had his pocket picked by UConn point guard Kemba Walker, leading to a breakaway, and he nearly botched a simple pick-and-pop pass to Kevin Durant on the following possession. Curry, meanwhile, stroked one 3-pointer and had a terrific 60-foot underhanded hook pass to Andre Iguodala ahead of the field for a breakaway dunk.

If Gordon is getting judged on his PG skills then his screwed. EJ is not a PG and shouldn’t be asked to be one. EJ is there for his shooting and his defense and I don’t think he is competing with Curry as much as he is competing with Westbrook, and Rondo. It would be a huge mistake for USA to cut EJ because without him they have a serious lack of shooters which is very important because driving isn’t a great an option in FIBA play because there is no 3 second violation. There are plenty of true points on the team, either Westbrook or Rondo should be cut because they rely too much on their driving skills and speed and don’t have a reliable long range shot.
Also the other day EJ hit a buzzer beating 3 in a scrimmage against the select team so I think he can afford at least one bad day when being asked to do something he isn’t used to doing.

Just curious how you guys are watching these guys play? Is it being televised or are you lucky enough to watch these guys live? I would love to see these scrimmages on tv or streamed on the internet so any tips would be much appreciated! Thanks!

I agree- ej is needed for being the guy who plays better d! I hope he makes it – he takes thinks very hard and will start the year in a funk.

Wow, hopefully he makes it. I think the experience will be invaluable to a guy like EJ.
but now that Indy got their point guard it doesn’t seem like we’re going be able to push Davis for Granger. darn.

Chandler, don’t worry. Davis for Granger wasn’t going to happen.

We could’ve should’ve had Granger, for nothing but we opted for the stud Yaroslav. Remember? Granger was picked right after him. Oh well!!

Everyone has there ups and downs and yeah gordon should make the 12 man roster. Not only would it benefit the usa team by have a good 3pt shooter like gordon, but it will benefit gordon which has s yet to reach his full potential and team usa gives him that boost to reach it. When gordon reaches it he gonna be a beast. I give him this season coming and the next one to reach his full potential. Dont worry ej ur time will come

Curry is straight up better than Gordon so it wouldn’t surprise to see him get the nod. Curry is a special player.

Gordon is a way better defender then Curry and Curry also won’t handle the contact of the international game well while Gordon is very good at taking contact and still finishing. Both Curry and Gordon should be going to Turkey, the cuts should be Westbrook, Granger, and Mcgee. Westbrook was just plain horrible in the scrimmage and looked lost, Granger looked just as bad and couldn’t score to save his life, and Mcgee isn’t ready yet and it showed during the scrimmage.

It seems Gordon is still on the team, at least according to ESPN.com

Jeff Green and JaVale Green got cut. The team is only taking 13 guys so they are going to make one more cut. Im guessing the game tonight will be a make-or-break moment for Gordon.

bestclipfan: Some good points on Gordon v. Curry. Gordon is stronger although I don’t usually think of him as a lock down defender. I’d like to see Gordon have more steals and deflections. The whole team is defensively challenged since Camby was traded. Both Curry and EJ should make it — I agree. Seems Coach K likes Gordon’s ability to hit outside shoots against the zone which is what Team USA will see a lot of against International Teams.
Either way, mad props to EJ who is representing the Clippers nicely during the tryouts.
