Dissecting the Side-Screen Roll Since 2006

Eric Gordon Named to Team USA’s Final Roster

Posted by Kevin Arnovitz on August 24, 2010 at 10:50 am

From USA Basketball’s press release:

ATHENS, Greece (August 24,  2010) – With one exhibition game remaining and just four days out from the tip of the FIBA World Championship for Men, USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo today announced the 12 players who will represent the United States at the 2010 FIBA World Championship.

Named to the 12-man 2010 USA World Championship Team were: Chauncey Billups (Denver Nuggets); Tyson Chandler (Dallas Mavericks); Stephen Curry (Golden State Warriors); Kevin Durant (Oklahoma City Thunder); Rudy Gay (Memphis Grizzlies); Eric Gordon (Los Angeles Clippers); Danny Granger (Indiana Pacers); Andre Iguodala (Philadelphia 76ers); Kevin Love (Minnesota Timberwolves); Lamar Odom(Los Angeles Lakers); Derrick Rose (Chicago Bulls); and Russell Westbrook (Oklahoma City Thunder).

The 2010-12 USA National Team coaching staff is led by Duke University’s Hall of Fame coach Mike Krzyzewski, and features as USA assistant coaches Syracuse University’s Hall of Fame coach Jim Boeheim, Portland Trail Blazers head coach Nate McMillan and Toronto Raptors head mentor Jay Triano.

“Rajon came to us and said he was going to withdraw from the team, that he had some family matters to attend to and some things to take care of before the NBA season.  He did an outstanding job during our training, we appreciate the effort and commitment he made to our program and he completely has our support,” said Colangelo.

The USA World Championship Team will complete their exhibition tour facing Greece in Athens on Wednesday (12 noon EDT).  The U.S. will then travel to Istanbul on Aug. 26 and train prior to starting the World Championship.

The 12 members of the USA World Championship Team, by the end of the FIBA World Championship (Sept. 12), average out to be 24.66 years old. The roster features six players 22 years old or younger – four players who are just 21 years old (Durant, Rose, Gordon, Westbrook) and two who are 22 years old (Curry, Love).  The oldest player on the USA roster is Chauncey Billups, who is 33 years old.

By comparison, the 2006 team averaged 24.58 years of age; 26.16 in 2002; 27.83 (NBA lockout year) in 1998; 26.33 in 1994 and in 1990, the last team consisting of collegians, was 20.08 years old.

The 2010 USA World Championship squad averages 5.0 seasons of NBA experience, with one player having one season (Curry), four players (Gordon, Love, Rose, Westbrook) possessing two seasons, one with three (Durant), one (Gay) with four, one with five (Granger), one with six (Iguodala),one with nine (Chandler), one with 11 (Odom) and one with 13 seasons (Billups).

Clippers in Mix for Carmelo Anthony?

Source: Chris Dempsey of The Denver Post

Meanwhile, if the Nuggets cannot convince Carmelo Anthony to sign an extension with the team and they decide to trade him at some point, could it be to the Los Angeles Clippers? I’m hearing it could be a possibility. It would get both he and his wife, La La, out to where entertainment opportunities are plentiful, which is key factor in their decision to want to move on.

Great that Gordon is on the team. Apparently he made it on his own. The report I read said Rondo was going to be the last cut. Apparently, they arranged a diplomatic exit for him with the other story. He’d lost his starting PG position to Rose and then slid down the depth chart. In the last game he had a DNP.

I mention this to highlight that Gordon made the team on his own.

As for the Carmello Anthony to the Clippers rumor . . . well, that would sure be cool. It’s a good move for him because he can play with Griffin, Kaman and Gordon. All the reasons why the Clippers would have been a good team for Lebron still hold for Anthony. It’s probably the best move he could make for himself, so maybe it’ll happen.

As for how the trade might work . . . hmmmm, well it’d be interesting. My first thought is not to give up any of the core three of Griffin, Kaman or Gordon.

My second thought is to trade Davis. His salary this year is about $13,000,000 and Anthony’s is about $17,000,000. That probably barely fits into the 125% paramater, but the Clippers have cap space and a trade exception to work with. I don’t know why Denver would take Davis under any circumstances, but it is a pleasant thought.

Maybe a first round draft pick, ours or Minnesota’s.

Maybe Denver isn’t in a strong position to get much for him since this is the last year of his contract.

Anthony will sign for over $20,000,000 after this season, and the Clippers might not want to pay that.

Well, I doubt it happens, but it’d be cool if it did.

  18. avatar JL from Estonia Said,

Congrats to Eric. I really hope he will get playing time at the World Championship also.

As for Anthony, I think it would not be a good move. Denver would ask for some pieces (that could be useful in the future) for Carmelo. We cannot be sure that he would play for us beyond that season. NY and Amare are really calling for him and CP3/Tony Parker. Also I do not think that Denver would want Baron included in the deal, Gordon would interest them a lot more. I think thad if Denver make Carmelo available then there would be many other teams also interested and they would probably make a deal with team which gives them the best pieces. So I think we would not need to risk losing pieces for Anthony for one season. He will be available in the summer and if we have a good season then maybe he will consider joining us.
As for Baron, I think we should give him another chance. We have a new coach and hopefully they connect better than with Mike. Also we have healthy Griffin who will probably motivate Baron also.

    These are just my thoughts.
    Greetings from Estonia.

As a long time fan, I like this for two reasons:
    1. Gordon worked himself onto this team. In an age where bravado rules, I’ve always respected this kid’s quiet demeanor. He lets his game talk for him. On the other hand, I wished he would become more confident of his abilities, and grow comfortable with becoming the Clipper team leader. Playing with the best in the world, beating some of the best in the world, can give him that.
    And better yet….
    2. I can honor a Clipper player by finally buying his jersey, AND NOT 1 F’ING CENT I PAY GOES TO Sterling.

And as far as the Melo situation……

I propose giving up Ryan Gomes + Aminu + Minnesota’s pick . Thats it. Also , I am not sure whether the money adds up.

That gives Denver two options at small forward and a future prospect , with a possibility of picking from 1-10 in the lottery….

If other teams ( i.e Lakers were able to get Gasol for picks ) can pull off lop sided trades, why not LA?

    Bongstradamus Reply:

Denver would never make that trade. You gotta think realistically, we have to give them an offer that they would be stupid not to take. Melo is one of the top 5 players in the league, Denver wouldnt trade him for Gomes, Aminu and a pick. That doesnt work salary wise and it doesnt work talent wise.

We will have to put forward at very least Kaman and then maybe Gomes, Aminu and the pick. Even then, Denver will only make a deal that makes sense to them.

Given their problems at the 5 (Nene’s spotty health and lack of bigs) Kaman is probably the peice that has to move to even get them to take our call.

    Josh Reply:

And the money does not add up. Baron or Kaman would almost certainly have to be in the deal, and I know which one of those they would take in a hearbeat.

Carmelo’s not a top 5 NBA player. Top 10. He isn’t that great at anything but scoring, and he’s not the most efficient scorer. I’d love to see him here as the 3 between EJ and Blake, but let’s not confuse being a high scorer with being a super-elite player. I think Blake and Eric may each wind up being better all-around players.

and Josh you haven’t seen Carmelo lately. He’s a better all around player than lebron. He’s dangerous in the paint on the arc and on D. He’s a top 5 player for sure. In fact I’d say he’s the 4th best in the league

I agree with JL from Estonia, on the Anthony trade:
“So I think we would not need to risk losing pieces for Anthony for one season. He will be available in the summer and if we have a good season then maybe he will consider joining us.”

I’d much rather sign Anthony a year from now and not give up any of the core (Griffin, Kaman, Gordon) and not give up a number one draft pick. This season is shot anyway. Why hurt the future by trading away valuable assets.

I disagree with him about Davis:
“As for Baron, I think we should give him another chance.”

Davis for two years has proven himself to be a dog. No solid reason to think he’ll change except wishful thinking. Golden State knew he was a dog when he was there. That’s why they benched him at the end of his last season there and why they didn’t match the Clippers offer. He’s been playing people here in Clipperland for fools ever since he got here, and he’ll do it again this season — if tehy don’t dump him.

Kaman, Aminu, and a pick for Melo. Then this season actually has a chance. Can’t add Gomes, Butler, or Foye into the deal until Dec. 15th. If we have to wait ’til Dec. 15th we can sweeten the deal by offering Butler and Foye and taking J.R. Smith.

Best case scenario would be finding a 3rd team to take Davis and give us a starter vet PG in return to help Bledsoe grow.

They are delusional in Denver. They don’t realize that if Carmelo Anthony does not want to play there, they really have almost ZERO leverage. And, really, when a superstar is traded because he WANTS TO LEAVE, the team he is going to rarely has to gut itself.

Sam Mays is right. I just checked the Clippers salaries over at hoopshype, and the Clippers are on the line for about $10 million next year for Cook, Foye and Gomes. I’d already not liked any of those three signings and now I think they are a disaster.

I really do *not* want the Clippers to trade Griffin, Kaman or Gordon for Anthony. If he wants to go to either the Knicks or the Clippers, then the Clippers are in a strong position. What would the Knicks be able to give up? Probably nothing but a draft choice.

It may be the only thing Denver can get for Anthony (since he has to sign off on the deal) is a number one pick plus some secondary players (Cook, Foye and Gomes). Better than getting nothing for him after this season.

Hopefully there’s some way to dump Davis to a third team in the deal.

Gordon is the best shooter on the olympic team, which basically means he is a top 5 shooter in the nba. You don’t trade a 21 year old top 5 shooter for anything. Nor do you trade a #1 draft pick that hasn’t played and looks like amare if he only rebounded and played defense. People on this blog don’t seem to understand that carmelo sucks without billups. Does anyone remember the season with iverson???? even with billups and nene carmelo cant get to the west finals. carmelo would work on our team if we gave up gomes or something besides that lets wait and see what we have before we trade our whole future for a primadonna that hasn’t won anything. carmelo is top 10 at best. top 5 : the trader, the rapist, nash, howard, wade or take a pick from the celtics.

    Thumb up Thumb down 0

    avatar

    JaySee Reply:

First of all, I highly doubt the Clippers would offer Griffin or Gordon. Second, the current Olympic team is definitely NOT the top of the NBA. Denver’s problem has been lack of defense, not offense. Carmelo didn’t have Steve Nash to make up for that like the Suns do. His teams were also nowhere near as good as the Lakers or Spurs, so not getting to the Finals isn’t that big of a knock.

By Trader, do you mean traitor? Meaning LeBron?
The rapist, I have no idea who this is. I’ll take a guess at Kobe.
Nash is not top 5 and neither is anyone on the Celtics.
Carmelo is a possible top 5, but there is also Durant and CP3 that could fit there.

I’m all for ditching Kaman, Aminu, and a draft pick for Melo.

    Bongstradamus Reply:

I think Melo is easily top 5 and probably the 4th best player. Id rank the top 5 in this order

    1. LeBron (now in his prime)
    2. Kobe (getting older)
    3. Wade
    4. Melo
    5. Durant

And I think Durant will move to the 3rd spot by end of this coming season and Kobe may drop off altogether once his age catches up with him.

Whenever you have a chance to secure a talent like Carmelo, you pursue it. He is exactly the kind of player we need at the 3 and if we have to give up our scatterbrained Center, we still come out ahead.

Nuggets have billups, jr smith, birdman, Kmart, and Nene who are all good defenders so I don’t see how they have defensive problems maybe they shouldn’t have given away camby to us then. Name the top five shooters in the nba and tell me EJ isn’t in there whatever your qualms with the olympic team. The guy is deadly and I agree we shouldn’t trade him or griffin. Nash is a leader and melo isn’t that why he’s better than melo and so are KG and Pierce. Melo sells jerseys and the posters on your wall thats probably why you think he’s better but what has he done for the nuggets besides bomb in the playoffs every year? Its easy to say the lakers and spurs are better because duncan and kobe are miles beyond melo, even as they get older. I mean you can make excuses for the guy not having a good team, and no defenders, and other teams are just better so what makes him top five if he can’t be a leader. I’m with ya in dumping Kaman for him but that’s not gonna happen, he’s not coming and neither is lebron… yea the traitor sorry my grammar isn’t too great these days its called a blog ya douche.

Well, at least we’re in the mix. Golden State has less talent to trade away after the Lee swap, but could send Ellis and Brandon Wright. New Jersey would have to give up Derrick Favors and Terrence Williams and an expiring contract (if they have one). Charlotte could send Dampier’s expiring contract and probably Tyrus Thomas.

My guess is we’d have to send Kaman no matter what, plus either Gordon and draft picks. Curious. All four teams would be desperate to get him.

    That article sounds promising.

They’ll probably want Griffin and the Clippers would be fools not to do it. You got a top 5 player 26, in his prime. Even if you consider him top 10. Who knows if Griffin will resign with the Clippers down the road, and who knows how good he’ll be. Maybe he’ll injur his knee again, or if it’s even the same as it used to be. I guess try to make the best deal possible, but give them whatever they want.

Agreed. Though I’d be quite heartbroken if we lost Griffin and/or Gordon. Best trade scenario I’ve seen so far is Kaman, AFA, and Minny’s 1st rounder. Denver gets an all-star C with 2 years left on his contract, a promising 1st rounder in AFA, and a guaranteed lottery pick with Minny’s pick. With Kaman in the mix, this will keep Denver competitive as they try to rebuilt. Coincidentally, Kaman’s and Billup’s contracts both end in 2012, which will give Denver a fresh start and opportunity to rebuild.

I highly doubt any other team (NJN in particular) can offer Denver a better haul. Only trade that tops the Clips’ is if NJN is willing to part with Lopez, Williams, and maybe Favors… but who would they have left after that?

Keep the starting core in place: Davis, Gordon, Griffin, Kaman – I am a believer of the smooth talking technique.

If Olshey has skills, he could talk Denver into taking any combination outside of the core above. Sell Carmelo on our situation, on Los Angeles, on the team. Offering Denver our better players is like trying to buy some one’s love. Im just say’n.

It’s like mumbling your words , going blank, or saying stupid things when you are trying to have a conversation with a very hot woman – instead of being smooth and confident.

And if nothing comes about, we go back to our plans and expectations of going .500 this coming season.

Petey people dont give away talent in this league, especially with a player like Melo. Youve got to give a good deal or youre left out of the discussions. If you were the GM for Denver, would you take a deal for all our scrubs?

Yeah but denver is screwed either way if melo doesn’t want to play he’s not and so they will be forced to trade whoever they can get. Im sure melo can wait if they refuse to trade him, denver is just trying to get someone before they get shafted like cleavland. Denver is not expecting to get anyone as good as melo. If i was denver i would look at bledsoe aminu butler and minnesota first draft pick we be inticing if u think about it .

If we lose Kaman and draft picks… What if Melo doesnt stay seeing as how our starting frontcourt would be two pretty much nba rookies, and at that dj might only be good enough to be a backup in the league. So now in one years time the clippers have to sign a decent center, hope Melo doesnt take another FA offer, and re-sign gordon to a nice deal… That is a pretty tall order.

Option B Try to get him when he is a FA next year and be instantly competitive. If he goes elsewhere the Clippers get 2-3 lottery picks in two years, cap room flexibility, the ability to sign gordon and griffin to big deals. Looking at the incoming lottery crop those 3 picks should give the clippers a good shot at some great pgs and sfs… Bledsoe/AFA insurance.

This is something we need to put every bit of energy into. The Clippers have terrible luck during FA trying to get talent. Im a firm believer that the best way we can build this team up is to trade into talent.

An opportunity like this doesnt happen often, we need to do everything we can to secure this deal.

Agreed. We missed out on Lebron, and now we have legit chance at landing the 2nd or 3rd best SF in the league. Summer league showed that aminu won’t be ready for a while, this may be the best chance we have at filling the 3 spot for years.

Clipper fans are so starved for a winning team that theyare looking for a saviour to lead them out of the wilderness. Carmelo Anthony is not the answer. First of all he will cost us too many pieces. Second, his salary will cause us to be locked in cap hell. Third, he is not that good. Fourth, he is not a team player. Fifth, his interest in the entertainment industry is oddly reminescent of one Baron Davis (what a disaster that acquisition was). Sixth, Isee him hampering the development of two stars in the making (the G-Men). Olshey don’t pullthe trigger on this guy. It will be a mistake of epic proportions. Now, all you guys can have at me and tell me I’m nuts; but that’s my opinion for what it’s worth.

    Bongstradamus Reply:

I reject all your conclusions. A player of this caliber would not cost us too much, we dont have a player with Carmelos ability on the team. Of the trade peices we do have, only 1 is worth never trading and thats Blake Griffin. Eric, i love him, but he isnt someone you hang a franchise on. Kaman is expendable as well. We dont have any talent we need to keep on long term except Blake.

The salary Carmelo demands isnt that much if we move out Kaman or Davis. You’re not thinking about the bigger picture, which in this case is in order to receive Carmelo, we have to trade the amount of his salary back.

Thirdly, youre on crack. Carmelo is a complete player. He does everything on both sides of the court and cannot be left open on offense or hell murder any team in the league from any spot on the floor. Carmelo is actually more skilled across the board than LeBron. He can do everything LeBron does AND shoot, the only difference is that what LeBron does best, he does at a level that none of his peers come close to. Carmelo is an extremely skilled player.

Your comment that he isnt a team player was accurate for the first 3-4 years of his career, but once Billups came to Denver he matured very quickly and became a team player. Coach K also had great things to say about his influence and ability to contribute on Team USA. I dont think that perception holds now, alot of that is just simple maturity.

The entertainment industry comment is just retarded. Everyone knew Baron was all about the money and thats why he signed here to begin with. Barons always been about the money.

Sixth, i dont see him on the team hampering the development of the two stars who play two other positions Carmelo doesnt play. Thats 3 guys on a team that could demand a double team which means someone is open. Having a guy like melo is EXACTLY what we need and it will reduce the pressure on the younger guys to carry the team, allowing them to mature at a more even pace.

I agree with you mostly Bong. I think melo would be great on this team. He’s one of the top 5 scorers in the league, and above average at most everything else…if we could get him for the right price I think he’d be great.

It would have to be a sign and trade that didn’t move gordon or griffin though. Kaman + picks + whatever else we need to make the money work seems like the ceiling to me. They may have better offers than that.

  39. avatar Dump Davis Said,

I agree with much of what rg12 said. I especially do not want to give up any of the core three (Griffin, Kaman, Gordon). Kaman is the best center in the western conference. If you disagree, name a center that’s better. Griffin and Kaman together are the best big man tandam in the west and maybe in the entire league. The NBA is a big man’s league. Getting rid of Kaman is a terrible idea.

I don’t even want to give them Minnesota’s number one pick because that pick could easily turn into a great player. I would give the Clippers own number one pick along with a couple of the new players. Denver is not in a strong position on this.

I would give up more if the Clippers could dump Davis in the process.

Better centers in the West: Yao, Chandler, Bynum, and probably Cousins.
Better big man partners: Gasol Bynum, Odom Gasol, Duncan McDyess, West Okafor, Chandler Dirk. That’s just the West. East: KG Perk, Smith Hortford, Howard Lewis, Boozer Noah.

Kaman is MORE than ditchable. The only thing I agree with is that Denver is not in a strong position. To get Melo to OK the trade so he’ll sign the extension they would have to not take too much talent away from the Clippers. Kaman is NOT a big loss and is a must for the trade to match salaries. They would not take Davis. They’re not THAT desperate.
