Los Angeles Clippers v. Detroit Pistons Game Thread

If you want to talk about the underrated dunks of Blake this season, the Pistons game a month ago provided a lot of them.

Blake even made a dunk attempt spectacular.

Confronting the Backcourt

Posted by Charlie Widdoes On December - 16 - 2010

When Baron Davis came back a couple of games ago, I couldn’t help but wonder how it would impact the Clippers’ backcourt rotation. Eric Gordon had taken his game to another level in Davis’ absence, seizing control of the offense and assuming a majority of the playmaking duties. Hopeful point guard of the future, Eric Bledsoe, made his case that the future could be sooner than we thought. We even saw encouraging signs from 2nd round pick, Willie Warren, when he was forced into duty. And Rasual Butler hasn’t gone anywhere, playing about 20 minutes a night despite the best hopes of some (many?) Clipper fans. Now with Randy Foye set to return from a hamstring injury, the backcourt is on the verge of being completely healthy and, from the looks of things, overcrowded. Gordon is firmly established as one of the best guards in the NBA, but there are five others worthy of varying amounts of playing time. The timing of Breene’s trade post couldn’t be better, as it seems unlikely Vinny Del Negro and Neil Olshey will be able to accommodate everyone if healthy. Of course, teams are rarely at full health, and it makes no sense to make moves with this group counting on it. But this is a particularly interesting situation, thanks to the precociousness of the rookies, the underperformance of vets (Butler and to a lesser extent Foye) and, of course, the contract of Baron.

The Biggest Factor: Chris Kaman

“Just when we thought things couldn’t get any worse,” as one of us ClipperBloggers put it, after the latest Donald Sterling story. The Clippers were already well into a frustrating first half of December, putting together a string of pretty good winless basketball. That’s one of the problems of being a hopeful, young team trying to get by on energy and raw talent: it ebbs and flows. You can play the Lakers tough and lose by one. You can play the Grizzlies not quite so tough, turn the ball over a million times, and lose by one. You can cut the turnovers against the Magic and forget how to make shots in the first quarter, almost come all the way back, and lose to a good team that happens to be struggling. In the end, you’re 5 and 21, and if winning makes everything better, losing happens to make everything worse. Enter Donald Sterling, prince of ownership darkness.

Happy Lifting of Trade Restrictions Day!

Hooray! It’s December 15th! Now the entire Clipper roster is available for trades. Prior to the draft and free agency this season the Clippers only had 5 players on the team: Baron Davis, Chris Kaman, DeAndre Jordan, Blake Griffin and Eric Gordon. It made sense because the Clippers were clearing the requisite cap space to go after a big time free agent, but a small side-effect of the cleaning was limiting the trade options before December 15th for management. Let’s check out the Tsar of Salary Cap’s explanation. Take us away, Larry Coon:

Explosion Backed Hope

Posted by Breene Murphy On December - 15 - 2010

With the heart-rending losses as the Clippers are about to go on the road, where they haven’t won a game this season, mixed with Sterling making a fool of himself again, I suppose it’s time to get a dose of hope. Everyone’s favorite, former ClipperBlogger D.J. Foster narrates a segment of Blake Griffin highlights. You must be forewarned, it does contain highlights from the 2006 Nuggets playoff series, which could induce serious trauma. And from D.J.’s distressed voice, I think he had been drinking a scotch and smoking a cigarette for hours in a bar by himself while crying about the far fall from 2006 before he recalled the blinding inspiration of Blake (and Eric) and set his lamentations and words of hope to a soundtrack of inspirational instrumental rock. Check it out.
