The worst thing for a team to be in professional sports is mediocre. In the NBA, perennially landing in the late lottery is the kiss of death. You’re not contending, you’re not rebuilding towards something better – you’re just there. Barring a miracle, your fate is all but pre-determined when you frequently occupy the late lottery.

Although getting on in age these days (30, will be 31 in January) and not flying as high as he once did with the Warriors and Suns, Jason Richardson can still play the shooting guard and small forward positions capably on offense and defense. He’s just finishing up a 6-year, $70 million contract, and obviously now that he’s 30 and coming off his prime he should see fewer years and fewer dollars in his next deal.

The gist:  A former 2nd round pick out of UCLA, Mbah a Moute has embodied the tough-minded approach of his coach, Scott Skiles, and the defense-first (defense-only?) performance of his team, the Milwaukee Bucks, through his first three seasons.  He does not fit the mold of the small forward we have been talking about for years — he is NOT a shooter — but as a restricted free agent when the league resumes operation, he could be an interesting option for the Clips if the price is right.

Technically speaking, the small forward position should be the easiest to fill in the NBA. The league is littered with athletes in the 6-foot-8 range – quick players with the skills to play on the wing and the size to help in the frontcourt. The skilled center comes rare, the true point guard capable of running a team perhaps even rarer. But wing players – they’re a dime a dozen.
