Dissecting the Side-Screen Roll Since 2006

Midseason Report Card: Caron Butler

Posted by Nick Flynt on February 26, 2012 at 7:58 am

Caron came into this season as the Clippers’ new answer at SF with Al-Farouq Aminu traded away and Ryan Gomes being Ryan Gomes. He also came in on a 3-year, $24 million contract, while coming off of knee surgery at the age of 31. Despite the age and surgery (and reputation as a bit of a gunner), Caron has filled his role about as well as expected.

His career up until this point was more about creating shots than spotting up, but he’s limited his bad possessions and is shooting slightly above league average on 3-pointers (among small forwards). Defensively he’s been solid in isolation and pretty bad in terms of closing out and chasing screens. Taking into account the lowered expectations in terms of being in a bit of a foreign role and being on the down slope of his career, he’s been okay.

Overall Grade: B

A “B”?!? Seriously, there are games we never would have won without his fast start in the 1st quarter. Without him we’d be behind the Lakers in the standings. Perhaps he gets a “B” if you’re looking at him in a vacuum, but if you are looking at him as a member of a team, then he gets an”A”, no question about it. Thank goodness we’ve got Caron!

Yes I agree he has been “okay.”

    Major upgrade from Gomes!!

Clips never had significance in the all star game. Don’t know how to feel….ha

We haven’t won anything yet but being a clip4life is not bad at all!

Lets show the world we are for real!

i can’t believe it! this is kinda cool, bobby has always been a fan favorite and an actual good all around player. definitely gonna welcome him back and will be interesting seeing him, of the clippers of old, mix with the new winning lob city.

Bobby Simmons has been a good player exactly once in his career, and it was 7 years ago (check out Danny Chau’s awesome article on it if you haven’t already: http://www.hardwoodparoxysm.com/2011/08/the-lost-season-bobby-simmons-04-05/). But yeah, that fact that it was for the Clippers certainly earns him minor fan favourite status. He might not be worse than Gomes.

I loved Bobby-O as a Clipp. Was sad to see how it turned out in Mil (though happy he got paid), he had a horrible first season and his brother was murdered and seemed like he never got back on track.

still have found memories of Brand kicking it out to him for that automatic baseline J.

Without Tuff Juice we’d have at least two less wins. Flynt, I give your post a C.

IMO this article is right on target. We knew Caron was more than capable of being a good player….. we paid him like he is a good player…. and he has been a good player.

He hasn’t been spectacular. Streaky on offense. At times disappearing on D. But a major upgrade over what we had. And also a really good fit for what this particular incarnation of the Clippers is lacking.
