Report: Clips Bringing Back Bobby Simmons

A second stint with the Los Angeles Clippers awaits for 2004-05 NBA Most Improved Player award winner Bobby Simmons.

The Clippers are planning to sign Simmons out of the D-League to a 10-day contract after the All-Star break, according to sources close to the situation.

Simmons, 31, is averaging 13.5 points and 7.6 rebounds for the D-League’s Reno Bighorns. He last played in the NBA during the 2010-11 season, appearing in just two games with San Antonio.

The 6-foot-6, 220-pound swingman’s greatest NBA success came with the Clippers in 2004-05, when he averaged 16.4 points and 5.9 rebounds to earn Most Improved honors.

I loved Bobby Simmons when he was with the Clippers back in 2004-05. Unfortunately he left the team for money and a better team. He did everything you would want out of wing player: defend, slash a little and shoot the 3-pointer sufficiently. However, given his age now and nobody knows what he can do, signing him to a 10-day contract and maybe the rest of the season wouldn’t hurt. I still wouldn’t mind trying for Ray Allen if we’re going to trade Mo and Bledsoe. Point guards are everywhere and we can find them. Although I would be sad to see Mo go in a trade.

  I would prefer a guard rotation of CP3, Ray Allen, Fortson, and Foye, over the current situation with CP3, Foye, Mo-Will, and Bledsoe. At least Foye and Fortson know that they are back-ups, and somehow I think Mo-Will and even Bledsoe believe they should be starting. Simmons makes sense as a back up to Butler, not a starter. I’d like the starting 5 to be cp3, Ray Allen, Caron, Blake and DJ, with Fortson, Foye, Simmons, Evans and KMart off the bench. Simmons had better bring it though, and I guess taking Gomes out of the rotation, Simmons has to be an upgrade.

Bobby Simmons is one of those tragic failures who got paid the mid level exemption. Seriously, they should have gotten rid of that–the MLE is cursed I say!

I am happy for Bobby..Hopefully Clipperlandia part deux will work out for him.

Hopefully he can still shoot that 15 foot fallaway from the right baseline that he perfected on the Clips last time he was here. He should be able to provide decent production as a backup to Butler, as long as he can still defend.
