I’m offically on the fire VDN bandwagon now.

I guess the silver lining is that if the Mavs lose tonight, they’ll also only be 6 games over .500

VDN seems like a nice and charismatic guy and all, but he’s taken this team as far as he can. they are clearly underachieving with the talent they have. the games look completely different from those at the start of the year and don’t give me that chauncey nonsense. he was good, but theres no way he was the only thing keeping them above .500

if you take a look at the shots theyre getting, theyre all contested jumpers, often toward the end of the shot clock. this is because teams have adjusted to VDN’s offensive system and VDN’s offense refuses to adapt in return. teams are trapping the high pick and roll and pushing paul out away from the basket, forcing the action to reset. when your only other offensive play is to post up blake downlow, its going to lead to a very stagnant offense and bad looks as the shot clock winds down. CP’s offensive genius can only carry a team so far once the opposing teams have figured out how to stop your only play.

and despite the supposed “speed and athleticism” of this team, they continue to be abysmal at closing out on shooters. their defense on the outside ball was nonexistent in Indy last night and during the clipper push tonight, any momentum was crushed by the open corner 3s OKC was getting.

i continue to be astonished by the bad looks the clippers get on offense and the open looks opposing teams get. everything seems so much more forced on the clipper end.

i’ve been a clipper fan since the loy vaught baseline jumper days and i can say that these games are possibly even more difficult to watch than some of those sub-20-win-season games. their potential is being completely squandered and if we dont do something about it, CP will be gone in a year and blake wont be far behind.
