Yeah, so about that whole being on the clock thing…

From ESPN.com:

Vinny Del Negro will return as the Los Angeles Clippers‘ coach next season, the team announced Tuesday.

The Clippers exercised their option on Del Negro, but did not disclose contract terms.

We’ll have more as the details come out, but for now, we know Del Negro will be the coach of the Clippers for the 2012-13 season.

Unreal. Truly unreal. Amazing how many times we’ve fallen for this from Donald. Mitch will turn down the Blazers job, and they’ll offer Neil a nice big contract and he’ll take it.

And 10 games into next season, the media will start to swirl around the team with the same smell for blood they had in Orlando with SVG and Howard this past season, and we saw how destructive that was.

Can’t say I didn’t see this coming. Next, we’ll get told that simply retaining Nick Young and (maybe) Billups and a full training camp is enough to beat OKC, the Lakers, and San Antonio with VDN running the show. Yeah right. Team is dead in the water starting right now. Watch CP go, and watch Blake Griffin have to get his money like Josh Smith did in Atlanta, by going to another team first before getting the offer sheet matched.

And Jerry Sloan was available. Unreal.

I was so excited when I read the headline. I thought Vinny had resigned. Then I realized he was re-signed. Ouch. Gut punch. Life as a clippers fan.

Unbelievably clueless move by DTS. Just when the franchise is finally on the brink of sustained elite status, he finds a way to throw a wrench into it.

Nothing worse than going into a contract year for your superstar than leaving it in the hands of the worst coach in the playoffs. Did he just not watch the Spurs series? Regardless of injuries, the coaching imbalance was laughable.

As soon as I saw twitter blowing up with these tweets, I got that feeling in my stomach again… any long term Clipper fan knows what I’m talking about, the start of several moves which begin the train wreck that will known as the year the Clippers did the impossible, and lost Blake Griffin and Chris Paul in the same off season. I don’t understand this decision at all, not when the coaching options were out there. 2 years ago this made sense. I understood this choice when our options were Dwanye Casey and VDN. But to chose VDN over SVG, Sloan, McMillian, and even possibly Jeff Van Gundy. But we won’t even know if any of them were interested in the position. Someone please help me understand this… anyone please.

vinny is terrible. i would have been happier if Clipper Darryl was named the coach. Did they ask Chris Paul? It’s hard to rewrite the history of a dysfunctional organization when the same people who screwed it up are still busy writing the present…

Speechless as is everyone that knows anything about basketball. I never thought DTS could screw this up if Olshey somehow stays and Vinny leaves next year while we keep Blake and CP3/or Bledsoe I can live with that,but man is this the wrong move

I know CP3 does not want to be seen as a coach killer but in this case it would be a justifiable homicide. I know Chris like a challenge but overcoming Vinny’s lack of preparation and adjustment is sometimes too great an obstacle.

and just like that we screw up with the coach. are yet to sign oshley, and under all of this we have half our team with expiring contracts, and our 2 best players in contract years. this could be OK, or we could end up like 2007 (basically 07′s bobcats)

Its the 1st of many moves the Clippers have to make in the off-season. Picking up the option on Vinny is not the worst move, especially if Olshey returns as well. We all know the roster has to be fixed on this team. I mean, check out OKC, they are running basically the same offense, and they’re in the Western Conference Finals 2 years running. Give Vinny some more time, and get behind your team, Go Clippers!!!!

Del Negro isn’t a horrible man like Dunleavy. I couldn’t stand to look at Dunleavy on the sidelines. Del Negro seems like a nice guy but he is incompetent as a coach for sure. He has some of the same deficiencies as Dunleavy in that he falls in love with a certain guy too much, in DeL Negro’s case — Foye. You have to believe that Chris Paul and Blake want the guy back and were consulted on this.

  All due respect, Mark, but that is a load of crap. Having met both men, I would say that calling Dunleavy a “horrible man” has no basis whatsoever, and neither does assuming Vinny is a “nice guy.”

I never really thought Vinny was a horrible coach but he never struck me as a good one. I guess will have to see if the small amounts of offensive and defensive schemes was a result of the shortened season with lots of additions throughout the season or Vinny just being a crappy coach. Ill cross my fingers and hope its the first but I think it probably is the second.

Lets remember Clipper fans, this is the CLIPPERS!!! Nothing comes easy for us. We gotta stay up late for a good Clipper win. I’m sorry, but its only fitting that a guy like Vinny be the one who leads us to the promise land. Imagine if Donald sold out and gave Phillup Jackson 15 million to coach the team, I’m sorry but I’d be sick to my stomach. We’re a lunchpail blue collar hard working team, with a hard working coach, who might have to take a few punches before he lands one, but lets hope Neil comes back, hope we can sign a few more good men, ready the troops in the off-season and return with the 1st All-NBA point guard, and a 1st team All-NBA performance from our Power Forward, see Deandre improve, watch Nick transform to a huge #3 option, sign a 3, move Caron to the bench with Bled, and Chaunce, sign a big, and acclimate Trey Thom to the mix. Say bye bye to Foye, and Kmart, and sign Reggie if the price is right! I know you’ve heard this before but, I like this team!

I guess Vinny sold the team’s consistency crap too well for DTS to buy it.
I can see his case where the team didnt have any gym time, etc. but but C’mon! We fans that saw most games can tell you how many times CP3 saved the day!. or how many times we lost cus of our coaching deficiencies to draw a freakin play! (gomes’s inbounds pass to the wrong guy vs the spurs comes to mind)

I dont see how Blake and Cp3 are on board. Cp3 is smart enough to see beyond this move. He aint staying period!.

Clips got to the second round of the playoffs with a shell of cp3, injured bg and butler, etc., were 15 games over .500 reg season. 9 new players integrated during the season, loss of billups early on. He seems to have good player support. Having a heavy play book under the circumstances would make no sense. He earned the job. Having said that, if we lose olshey, dts is at it again. If olshey re-signs with us, it’s all good. There’s something to be said for continuity.

For everyone faulting Vinnie’s coaching in the Spurs series, how are the Thunder going against the same team?

Just saying the Spurs are damned good and we can’t go blaming VDN for losing to them in the 2nd round of the playoffs…

No Chauncey Billups, 75% Blake and a 75% CP. Caron a broken bone in his hand and still got past a tough Memphis team and won a game 7 on the road! Had the best win percentage in Clippers history. Gosh how we have been spoiled! It wasn’t too long ago I remember counting on a three pointer from Dan Dickau to win a game!

After thinking about it for a day and listening/reading what people think about this move im really not that upset about it anymore. Its only one year so hes on the hot seat to make this team better. If he doesnt then they can fire him and get a new coach that CP3 wants. if they where to get a new coach right now they would have to give that coach a multiyear deal. If CP3 and that coach clash then its a for sure thing CP3 leaves because Clippers wont be able to get rid of the new coach. The only way Clippers will fail right now is not losing Neil Olshey. It would of been a disaster if they extended VDN’s contract but they only picked up his option for 1 more year and they use that to keep CP3 happy if he wants a different coach.

The worst decision made by our clipper’s management team post Olowokandii. lol Argh, it was dreadful watching VDN out there making ridiculous substitutions and predictable offensive plays. Clipper’s defense is laughable. VDN need to realize that Evans can be the “Ben Wallace” of the clippers. Screw DJ, he cannot guard the inside paint and he’s always trying to block shots leaving the paint vulnerable to offensive rebounds and inside dishes. Assuming we start Evans (and we should), we need a small forward with mid-range game and that can hustle on both sides of the court. During the off season, trainers need to train Blake on his mid-range shots and post-up game. Blake can dominate the inside paint if he can get his post up fade-away shots and post up hook shots down. Blake can be the next Karl Marlone, but there’s no one on the Clippers team to mold him into a Karl Marlone. ARGH.

  I hope someone has adviced Griffin to hire Olajuwon to teach him. I think that will be some of the best training he can get. With his work ethic he can learn a lot from Olajuwon.
