Marc Stein and Chad Ford are reporting a variation to the Mo Williams/Lamar Odom trade people have been speculating over recent days:

Sources told ESPN.com that the Jazz are willing to take on Mo Williams in a three-team trade scenario that would send Odom to the Clippers and enable the Mavericks to shed Odom’s salary without taking back any salary.

      Any team would have signed DJ to that money and rightfully so. He has the goods to be quality NBA Center–maybe not an All Star, but certainly a starting center in this league. He has also proven to be an excellent shot blocker and a rather decent rebounder. What needs to be seen, however, is whether or not he can develop more of an offensive game other than the three lobs a game he gets from Chris Paul.

I understand that the main potential holdup of this deal is whether or not Mo Williams will opt-in. Why WOULDN”T he approve this? He’ll never earn $8.5 million yr. as a free agent that he’s making on his current contract and he doesn’t want to be a 2nd string PG anymore.

  Mo would enjoy playing in Utah because he has the potential to start. Utah has NO perimeter game and Devin Harris was really not much help in that regard. This may be a good opportunity for him.

While Mo has been a great asset off the bench(i though at the beginning of the year he was a 6th man candidate), i feel that he is not growing into the role he has been given, and that he (and the cap) would be happier if he were in another location.

Yes. However, it appears that the main sticking point is that Mo wants to start.

Utah is not a contender. With Harris on the roster, it’s not a given that Mo will start there either.

  The only argument I have against signing Odom via free agency is that he’ll require multiple year. If we get him through trade, it’ll be about $8.5mil for one year vs. (not sure what he’s worth on the open market) I’m thinking $4 or $5mil for 3 years. If he sucks like last year, that’s multiple years we have to stick with him – may have another Gomes on our hands.

Apparently the hold-up on trading Mo Wililams for Lamar Odom is that Williams is deciding whether he’d rather go to the Lakers or the Jazz, Apparently both teams want to do the deal, and it’s up to Williams to pick between them.

Seems like he’s leaning toward the Jazz because he has a relationship with the Jazz coach who was an assistant there when they drafted Williams, and he thinks he’d get a lot of court time to do his thing and show how good he is.

On the other hand, the Lakers probably are telling him that he can lead them to a ring.

He’s apparently positive about going to either place.

The real good thing about the Lamar Odom for Mo Williams trade is that it’s a huge plus as far as getting somebody at center who is better than Jordan.

Then once the deal is done, the Clippers can turn their attention to getting rid of DeAndre DeGiant DeSaster.

I still want the Clippers to get Dwight Howard, even if they get Odom. Actually, getting Odom might make it easier to get Howard.

The Clippers are sitting in the perfect position. If Mo opts out, we clear that cap space, and if we amnesty Gomes, we have space under the cap to make moves. If he opts in, we trade him and get LO in the process, which is a huge upgrade, with that stretch 4, plus championship pedigree.

If he is trying to win, then maybe he’ll pay Gomes to leave, and use the cap space to add a player who can make a contribution.

Interesting article from Yahoo. Maybe it’s true. Maybe Utah took the deal without Mo Williams deciding to opt-in, which would give them the inside track on getting him over the Lakers. This way seals out the Lakers, since if he opt out to free agency, the Lakers won’t have room to sign him. Makes sense. If he doesn’t opt-in, the Jazz aren’t out anything. All they gave up was a trade exception.

My guess is it’s true.

Now on to the next step . . . getting rid of the Defensive Delusion.

Olshey does nothing unusual so far in Portland, and it looks like the Clippers will get Odom. Would Olshey have made a difference if he was still with the Clippers? Probably the same thing would have happened.

That team who has enough pieces to look like a threat to go the distance. Looking like that team where, a salty vet might want to take the mini to chase a ring, thinking he might be that last piece needed for a deep run. With Blake, LO, CP, Bledsoe, and should we sign a Nick Young, then we’ll get that last piece, and we will be dominant next year. The Mo Williams/ Lamar Odom deal seems to be moving toward completion.

The update posted on this article (above) has itself been updated, so things seem to still be a bit up in the air.

Harrison Barnes is a for sure 8 on a scale of 10. He definitely will be a very good small forward in the NBA, and he may be an excellent one. He’s a natural, a perfect prototype of what an excellent small forward will be.

I can understand whey the first three teams picked another player, but Barnes may turn out to be the best of the lot. The others have some downside that Barnes does not have.

But there is no excuse at all for Portland to pass on him and instead take a point guard from a small college who consensus says does not have natural pont guard skills but instead had been a good shooter in cmall college competition.

Then the soap opera actor stays true to form and selects a center from Lithuania based on potential, a center who most likely will be a stiff.

    Batum has been playing off the bench anyway and he can keep playing off the bench. If Barnes is good, they’ll find a spot for both. Batum also a restricted free agent, someone might pay him a lot and they don’t have to match. Batum isn’t someone you draft your team around.

      Batum is the starting 3 now. The team is built around LaMarcus Aldridge. Batum is a good defender with length and slashing ability and can also spot up and shoot. He basically did everything Caron Butler was able to do 6 years ago.

If everything goes according to planned, the Clippers will have turned, Al Farouq, Kaman, Gordon, and Williams into Odom and Paul. I’d make that deal every time. I think Lamar will like Vinny, just like everyone else on the team does. I think Lamar will play hard for Vinny, and Chris Paul, and Chauncey. I like the fact that Lamar and Blake are going to the USA team try-outs possibly as team mates, which will only help their relations, chemistry, and continuity coming back across the pond, after they both strike gold in London, with Bosh now, not being part of the Olympic team.

  Exactly, if he wants to get paid, he needs to take his game to the Salt Lake. Its hard to leave LA, we know this, but either way, you’re out. So, the best option for you is 8.5 million! Ok, opt-out, and we clear 8.5 under the cap, can amnesty Gomes, and have 12 million under the cap, and thats some nice flexibility. I’d rather have the Odom deal done though, so we can move on to some other pressing issues. With Paul, Blake, and Odom, plus being in LA, we should be able to attract some other ballers out there to come chill in the City of Angels, and chase the Larry O! Its this waiting, that is really getting on my nerves though. Williams has said since day 1, after we got eliminated that he would opt-in, so what’s the hold up? This isn’t very professional.

Question for Bongstradamus, Apostolos, and Clips4, is there a real possibility of adding EJ for Bledsoe, and assuming LO joins the Clips, and we amnesty Gomes, if we added EJ for Bledsoe, would there be any real possibilty of still making a run at KG?

  My idea on the EJ/Bled trade would only work for the next 2 days while he’s still under contract at rookie scale. After that I believe his QO is still a cap hold until he signs a deal.
  
  Then you sit on his QO and try to sign other guys in the interim before you need to match an offer he receives from another team.
  
  In that scenario, yea, you still have money to go after other FA’s.

  At this point getting KG is going to be hard if the Celtics decide they want keep their core together for one more run. KG is set on staying in Boston I think but I would love to have him. If we could pursue KG, that would be great. Having a lineup of CP3, EJ, Lamar Odom, Blake Griffin, and KG with DJ off the bench is an imposing starting 5. We would have so much size and length in the frontcourt that teams would have a tough time guarding us. Basically, the Clips would still have the full MLE to offer KG because KG isn’t going to get more than that on the open market for a player his age. C’mon Roesner Del Sackgro, make it happen!

It looks like motivation is the big gamble with Odom. It seems like a safe bet since Los Angeles is the last known city Odom was motivated, but I think the Clippers should wait for Odom to be bought out and see if he actually “wants to be here” (-Neil Olshey) for cheaper, then trade Mo to Utah or someplace else for other team needs. Odom taking a year off while on the job is unprofessional. I don’t think the Clippers have to give Odom and the Mavericks a prima donna bail out here. Mo played well despite his depressions and was even a mention for 6th man of the year. His value is probably a little higher than Odom’s right now.

There were a lot of people who questioned whether the Clippers would have enough flexibilty to make any moves to upgrade the roster this off-season, especially with Olshey leaving the franchise. Well? I like this first move, definately an upgrade in the frontcourt, fills a need, adds a dimension to the offense, and helps free up minutes in the crowded backcourt. Who should I credit for getting this deal done, Vinny or Gary, or both? Neil with the deal gets no credit. The schemes might not be great on offense or defense, but I think we have a coach who can reach Lamar, and get the best out of him.

It’s good to see that the soap opera actor is destroying Portland right off the bat.

HIs passing on Harrison Barnes is an excellent example of how clueless he is. He instead picked a 6’1″ point guard from a small college because the guy put up good shooting numbers against second rate college competition. The consensus opinion is that the guy lacks a point guard’s set of skills. But Olshey was pipedreaming about the guy’s shooting numbers at Weber State. Even if the guy’s shooting ability carries over to the NBA (small school shooting stats almost never carry over to the NBA), he’s still nothing more than an undersized shooting guard. It’s a typical Olshey fools gold move.

It’s like when he drafted Aminu because the Clippers needed a small forward. Aminu was not a small forward. He lacked small forward skills. Neither was he a power forward, because he was too small, even though his basketball skills were more like a power forward than a small forward. But the sopa opera actor saw potential in him as a small forward. Of course, Aminu was a bust.

It’s similar with DeAndre Jordan. Olshey saw potential in him and signed him to a cap eating, team-killing four year $42.5 million salary. The potential he saw in him was based on his size (he looks the same size as a real center) and so the clueless one completelyn ignored the simple fact that Jordan had almost none of the skills of a center. Olshey just started pipedreaming that Jordan would comehow develop them. Of course, Jordan is an even bigger bust than Aminu.

Olshey’s drafting this 6’1″ hot shooter from a small college who lacks almost all point guard skills is the same kind of thinking. Portland wants a point guard, this guy is the size of a point guard, maybe he’ll devleop the skills of a point guard. He won’t.

Good thing Olshey is gone and now is doing his damage somewhere else.

Harrison Barnes, who the clueless soap opera actor pased on, is an ideal, prototypical small forward. he will be very good at the worst. He may be the only “All Star” to come out of this draft. He is at least an 8 on a scale of 10. Larry Bird is a 10 at small forward. So is Lebron James. Kevin Durant may be a 10 eventually. Paul Pierce is a 9 at small forward. Harrison Barnes, at the least, will be almost as good as Paul Pierce and he may turn out to be as good.

It’s very important to have players that physically really are what they are trying to be. Eldon Brand is a little to small tro be a power forward. Eric Gordon is a little too small to be a shooting guard.

Then, of course, the player also has to hve the skills of the position he’s trying to play. Brand aand Gordon have the skills but not quite the size.

Harrison Barnes has both and because of that he will be a a very good NBA player for years.

It’s good Odom is coming to the Clippers, but if this move only switches out Kenyon Martin for Lamar Odom, where is the big improvement?

The important thing is that the Clippers use this as a step to get rid of DeAndre Jordan from the starting center role.

The Clippers still have to get Dwight Howard. Getting Odom may make the Clippers look like a better team to Howard, especially compared to the Nets.

Hopefully, Deron Williams will go to Dallas, and then the Nets will not have much of a team at all.

If worst comes to worst, then maybe the Clippers can bring back Kenyon Martin to back up Lamar Odom at center. There are problems with that, but the problems with starting DeAndre Jordan are far worse.

  Lamar can play 5 positions if needed, he can pass, shoot, defend and find his own shot. He’s a much more well-rounded and better conditioned player than Kenyon Martin.

  DeAndre needs more minutes and more focus on his development this season, just because of the contract we paid him and receiving a return on that investment. You do know he was a projected lottery pick at one point, right? And we scored him in the second round. Youve hated him even when he made $800k a year, so essentially, you’re completely irrational and unhinged when it comes to DJ and cant even recognize the improvements he has made since his rookie year. Theres a reason multiple teams offered him $10M a year.

I understand that KG is all about loyalty, but has he ever gotten a call from Vincent Joseph Del Negro before? That man could convince Mo Williams that everything is going to be ok, after adding Chris Paul and Chauncey Billups to the roster, and there was no problems, and that was a crowded backcourt (Foye, Young, Paul, Williams, Billups, Bledsoe). The Clippers should make a run at KG!
