UPDATE: It looks like Grant Hill is going to get the Bi-Annual Exception as a byproduct of the Gomes amnesty. He’ll get $1.95m this year and $2.04m in 2013-14 if the Clippers give him the standard 4.5% raise. $4m total for 2 years of Grant Hill is a pretty decent deal.

bout freaking time, this guy is just a useless dent in our funding for players. And the clippers weren’t rly invested in a lot of trades so fellow clips fans, lets not complain that there was a slight hope for a team actually wanting him in a trade.

I am so shocked over the amnesty use. Donald Sterling did not want to pay a player for doing nothing, but the front office had no other choice. Phoenix did not want Ryan Gomes in a sign-and-trade, and the Clippers did not want to lose out on Grant Hill. This could be an example of the 3-headed GM’s willingness to analyze all aspects of acquiring a player before having to use the amnesty as a last resort. Grant Hill will sign with the Clippers as a Bi-Annual Exception.

Rosner Del Sacksgro keeps stunning me. How are they doing this?

  The amnesty is exactly that. Gomes will be sitting at home but DTS still has to pay him for doing nothing. His salary just won’g count against the cap It would have been better to keep Gomes this season and then try to trade him mid-season to a team in need of cap relief so we could upgrade. I ultimately think that we might go out and overpay for a backup center with the 5M-ish we have available on the cap now..

I was to the point of no return on Ryan Gomes. He had a solid year with the Clips two years ago (when Baron and EJ were still on the team – HE WAS ACTUALLY A STARTER!!!).

His skill set was just very limited. He was an OK defender and a mediocre streak shooter – when his shot wasn’t falling, the Clips were playing 4 vs. 5 on offense.

No hard feelings Gomes but it had to happen.

Grant Hill, even at his advanced age, is a better player and can contribute in more ways.

    Olshey’s job in Portaland right now is a full rebuild. Batum wants no part of a full rebuild. Paul Allen basically cleaned house with the front office and the coaching staff by hiring Olshey and returning Pat Buchanan to his original job and firing Nate McMillan during the season last year. Also amnestying Brandon Roy and giving up on Greg Oden.

      When you have one of the best players in the game and you try to sign a couple centers to max contracts, you’re not trying to rebuild. It’s too early to tell, but so far he isn’t doing well. And they’re trying to bring in Phil Jackson for a non-coaching role? I’m guessing in a move to attract free agents like a GM should.

Interesting…so Clips still have Aminu’s TPE which is around $2.7 mil and the highest available amount left outside of a straight up contract they can now offer having taken Gomes $ off the books (though yes, they still are going to pay him). Hmmm…perhaps the idea of Jermaine O’Neal isn’t so far fetched right now. Maybe another trade is in the works too.

  No to Jermaine O’Neal. He’s a shell of his former self with all of his injuries.

  O’Neal has done orthokine procedure, same as Hill, same as Kobe. An NBA player’s biggest worry with age is his knees. Ankles can be up there too, but those are a bit more forgiving.
  
  He’s willing to sign for min and wants to play both sides of the ball. He was a very good shot blocker so that mentality is still there. We’re taking a risk on a few other players with age, so why not one more who can push (maybe even teach) DJ. In a couple of years Clips will be in great shape cap wise.

    I’m fine with JO if he’s the third string center to mentor DJ. I’d still rather have Darko or Blatche over JO.

The clips really arent the clips are they. I never would have thought in a million years sterling would let a player go and still pay him.
wow historic moment. clippers uncharacteristic like moves. they draft and trade someone from europe. they amensty a player who really was an overpaid cheerleader. Makes me think we could do other things that we didnt think was possible. what really would be shocking is that if howard goes to free agency next season would the clips go over the cap to get him. then i would be speach less

Good luck Ryan Gomes! When the Clippers signed Gomes and Foye I was pleased about it, Gomes had some really good games his first year. Best of luck to you, hope to see you around the league. Clippers are gonna regret amnestying you when you win MVP next year at 28ppg, 8rbs, and 5ast. Kidding about the last part

Andrew, going forward, how much cap room do we have left to sign a backup center? I remember you saying that amnestying Gomes would not necessarily mean we have $4 million more in cap space, if we were already over the cap when we amnestied him. (Correct me if I’m misremembering).

  You remember correctly, Voice of Reason. I currently have LAC at $66.22m (after Hill signing and Gomes amnesty) and they’ve used all their exceptions to sign free agents. Luxury tax is $70.3m, hard cap at $74.3m.
  
  So LAC has ~$4m in space to sign anyone before hitting the luxury tax line and ~$8m before hitting the hard cap. But they can only acquire players one of three ways:
  1. Sign players to minimum deals ranging from $500K to $1.3m.
  2. Use the trade player exceptions of Aminu ($2.75m), Cook ($1.22m) or Evans ($1.62m). These trade exceptions cannot be combined and can only be used to trade for players.
  3. Sign and trade Foye ($5.52m) or Martin ($3m) for a trade exception or for a player. I suppose LAC could keep Foye/Martin as well, but all indications so far seem to be that neither are returning.

How sad is it that a rebuilding Suns team wouldn’t even take Ryan Gomes in a sign and trade? They did the courtesy for Nash, but not Hill. I guess everyone knows how bad Gomes has deteriorated.

Re-sign Kenyon Martin and we’re a top 2 team out West!

Our chemistry would be insane. Each player has played with the other at some point in the past. For ex;

Butler & Odom – Miami
Billups & Odom – USA Team
Billups & Martin -Denver
Paul & Crawford – Offseason
Paul & Billups – Offseason
Hill & Del Negro – Phoenix (player / coach)

….it’ll be interesting if K-Mart comes back for 4mill.

KMart isnt coming back, especially to play for VDN. He never played KMart like he should have. KMart should have played a lot more minutes, especially in the playoffs.

Smart move. Gomes is useless. It would be great to keep K-Mart if possible. Hill is solid off the bench. I have to think another C will be picked up soon to “back up”/eclipse DJ.

Wow: Signed LO, signed Griffin 95M, offered CP 60M, obtained trade exception for Evans, signed Crawford, signed Billups, signed Hill, Amnestied Gomes. Who knew the Clippers front office was going to step up, and crush one deep over the left field wall, passed the bullpen into the field level bleachers, where you better bring your hard hat to watch a game, because things get a little rawdy out there. Where if you’re going to catch a ball over the wall, you better go up with your glove, and be prepared to take few elbows for your efforts to come down with the ball. Meantime, Portland took a big cut, and sent a little dribbler back to the mound, (the Ms pac-man sound when you lose) beau-beau-beau!
No one saw this off-season coming!!!

Why is there so much hate for DeAndre??? Look at how limited Dwight was in his first few years. DeAndre got som enice looks with his back to the basket late in the season and that wingspan could make him a tough cover with the right coaching. Fundamentals can be taught and improved upon but you can’t take a Kendrick Perkins and stretch him to 7′ with an eagles wingspan.

The system is just getting put in place. Get off the man’s back and give him a chance to improve.

  this year will say a lot about what DJ was doing this summer. Like, did he go to a big man camp and work on his back to the basket game and 10 foot mini jump shot and hook. If he still air balls free throws and still becomes a liability via the Hack a Shaq then the contract looks like a bust! But he’s Blake’s best bud and supplies energy so I hope it works out!

I don’t think I would have amnestied Gomes. It was only 4 million, but I guess they are looking to sign someone. Gomes could have still been utilized or moved later. You never know that amnesty clause could have come in more handy later. I wish Gomes the best. Seems like a great guy.

  You can only amnesty contracts that were signed before the new CBA, so there weren’t really any options other than Gomes. It’s not as if we could have amnestied Crawford or DeAndre if we decided we didn’t like their contracts.

  We don’t have any more space for wing players. We need to sign a backup center with the cap space left. Maybe get second and third string centers.

Gomes is a great guy. However, on the court, he was a liability last season.

If his time with the Clippers has shown anything, it’s that he’s more effective as a 4 than a 3.

He’d probably be fourth in the rotation at this point (Griffin > Odom >Thompkins > Gomes).

4mil is a lot to pay for someone to be ineffective in garbage time at the 3, when that cap hold can be flipped for a defensive 3 that (while 39) can still bother some of the best in the game.
