Clippers acquire Willie Green

The Clippers added one more deep shooter to the roster today. Last season was a relatively small sample size, but Green shot 44% from deep. Breaking that down further, Willie Green was 54% from the beloved corner-3 (27-50) and 37% from above the break (23-62).

Willie Green most likely has been acquired using one of the Clippers’ three trade exceptions: Aminu ($2.775m), Cook ($1.223m) or Evans ($1.622m). Considering that Green’s minimum salary is $1.229m, it’s more probable that the Evans or Aminu TPE was the one used.

Additionally, sign-and-trade situations require at least a 3 year contract, although the second and third year could be non-guaranteed or partially guaranteed.

The Clippers now have 14 players on their roster; 15 is the maximum allowed roster slots. Travis Leslie is the only player whose contract is only partially guaranteed.

Makes sense, after losing foye,williams, and young we didn’t have any 3 point shooters and willie green shot 44 % last season. Plus theres a good chance bill ups won’t be ready by the start of the season and then our guard rotation would be lacking, as in we would need to use travis leslie as a backup gaurd. I like it in any case fills a hole and adds depth.

Not SOFO!!! Ah oh well, there goes my 5 sofo comments a year. Really doesn’t matter Clippers were not going to bring him over anyway. Would be interesting to watch him try to play in the NBA and not just summer league.

  I agree I’ve been a huge fan of Sofo since he was a teenage phenom in Greece(Im Greek obviously)disappointed the Clippers never gave him a chance because I still think he would have been really good in the NBA but as we all know he was never going to make the roster with the Clippers. Willie Green though is a great signing I just hope he doesn’t take to many of Eric Bledsoe’s minutes. I’m also REALLY curious to see how Vinnie Del Negro will deal with such a deep roster sine he did such a great job last year(obviously sarcastic). Great signing though ,oh and Sofo just recently signed a contract with Panathainakos and I don’t think had any plans anymore of coming overseas

Great addition and best part is it didn’t cost anything. If the Clips bench wasn’t already considered the best coming into the season, it will be now. Watch out Heat, here come the Clips!

I personally don’t know if this is a good move, but I do know that because of this sign and trade, Adam Morrison will most definitely not make it. I talked to Eric Pincus on Twitter, and he didn’t think the Clippers was the right place for him. Summer league changed the perception. Robert Pack was pretty much setting up plays designed exclusively for his use, and my God, he was lighting it up. He respected Morrison’s game, Eric Bledsoe did, Hilton Armstrong. Morrison’s performance was the signaling of the arrival of the Cinderella Clippers, a team roster built up of has-beens and wash-ups, determined to resurrect their careers while simultaneously transforming the frugal franchise into a legit landing spot for the future.

Come training camp, Clippers will be forced to make a very difficult decision: do they cut Travis Leslie, or do they give up on Morrison?

I think it’s a good move, considering that CP3 played with Willie in NOLA. But, I just don’t know if Bledsoe is gonna get enough minutes.

Good pick up considering what the team gave up for him and he’s just a end of the bench guy. He will probably get more minutes at the start of the season since Billups will be out or not quite ready. He can hit the 3 and defend a little. He should be serviceable.

this is as deep a team from 1-13 as i can remember. no way in hell vinnie figures out how to use everyone correctly.

Same manic ride; better results. Some opportunity was lost, we got a little older and “win-now” than I’d like, but overall a solid offseason. I’d have liked to seen a bigger effort to acquiring longer term pieces, in the MarShon Brooks vein, and the Head Coach and GM positions, before Blake’s deal and CP3′s re-negotiation kicks in. We’re still 13 deep, but we only have 4 pieces at the core. But hey, we’re gonna go back to the playoffs. This is a good thing. Tim Floyd could even coach this squad to the second round.

The best part about aquiring all these veterans who are seasoned, smart, locker room, been there, done that types is now if Coach Billups goes down, interum Coach Del Negro won’t be over his head quite so much.

When I saw this sign I immediately thought vinny is gonna use his 3 guard line up when grant hill needs some days off due to age and butler who is injury prone. I’m sure that’s how vinny will use green. So I’m not worried about Bledsoe mins I am worried about will Leslie get waived and make room for white or Adam Morrison. That will be clips next move and I’m guessing final move. Good job on these off-season signs. Still think we should have pushed for Courtney lee a little harder but love the signs

Ho-hum on Green. He played with Chris Paul in New Orleans in 2010-2011 where he was 44% from the field and 35% in threes, averaging 21.7 minutes and 8.7 points a game. I assume this is another Chris Paul directed signing.

He only played in 4 of Atlanta’s five playoff games last season against Boston, and in those 4 playoff games he was a combined 1-4 in threes, which may not say much of anything except that they didn’t give him many three point shots in the playoffs.

The Clippers are still going to miss the three point shooting of Mo Williams and Randy Foye. This doesn’t do anything to make up for that loss of three point shooting.

The main good thing the Clippers did in the off season is signing three centers, all of whom are better than DeAndre Jordan.

They will be able to get much better offensive production from their center position, and they will be able to better plug the huge hole on defense that allowed so many poor opposing centers to simply destroy the Clippers.

Of course, that makes the wild assumption that now that they have three centers better than DeAndre Jordan, they’ll finally stop starting him.

They need to start Odom and then back him up with Turiaf and then use Hollins as necessary.

Jordan should be traded off for a second round draft choice just to get rid of his salary. That will be a huge step in clearing enough cap space for the Clippers to sign Howard as a free agent next season.

Another big barrier just popped up in the scheme of the Magic trading Howard to the Nets in January for Lopez. Turns out there’s a trade kicker in Lopez’s new contract that says if he’s traded anytime in the first three years of his four year deal, the team that trades for him has to pay him an immediate cash payment of 15% of the total value of the balance of his contract.

That means if the Magic trade Howard to the Nets for Lopez in January, the Magic also would have to pay Lopez an immeidate cash bonus of about $10 million. That’s on top of the $60 million they’d have to pay the often injured Lopez over the next four years.

It would be a terrible deal for the Magic.

Why did the Clips not resign Randy Foye? He was solid last season.

  Randy was a great character guy, he made some nice looks from beyond the arch during the 2nd half of the season, but his game was too limited, and he disappeared in the playoffs, except for that huge pressure/block on Gaye on that one shot at the end of one of those games. Other than that, NOTHING! The stage was too big for Randy, he never got comfortable, and we needed him to step up and be that 3rd option. It just never happened. A little too tentative on the dribble drive, no respect from the refs, and when he came clean to the hoop, he didn’t finish, advanced with the finger roll or the scoop shot, when he needed authority. Foye had dunk opportunities turn into missed layups, because again, a lack of comfort, lack of familiarity in those situations, when a young player like Bledsoe, knows when he’s up in there, its time to throw down nasty dunks. You can’t go tip-toeing around the basket and wish you made the lay-in, dunk it and leave no doubt! Foye was just too tentative. Solid, but not spectacular, and streaky at best, which in the end, did not get it done.

From what I read of at Hoops World, these teams have the lowest salary levels now:

Cleveland – $44 million
Phoenix – $49 million
Houston – $54 million (including one year left on Kevin Martin’s deal for $12.5 million)
Toronto – $55 million (including one year left on Jose Caldrron’s deal for $10.5 million)

Washington – $55 million
Charlotte – $56 million
Sacramento – $57 million
Portland – $57 million

The Clippers ought to explore trading Jordan to one of these teams.

Houston seems like the best target since they expressed a strong interest in Jordan a year ago, and they still need a center. Dwight Howard is not going to go play in Houston and neither is Andre Bynum, so as soon as Houston gets those pipedreams out of its head, then it get do something realistic like acquiring Jordan.

I agree the Clippers should have re-signed Randy Foye, who signed a one year deal with Utah for $2.5 million.

Maybe they just wanted to get rid of all of the soap opera actor’s signings. But Foye was the best of those signings, and they still have Jordan ahd his reamaing three years at $34 million and Jordan is by far the worst of the soap opera actor’s moves.

Foye came on as a good three point shooter the last part of the season, and the Clippers don’t have anybody else who can shoot threes as good as he was shooting them.

In March he shot a very good.398 in threes, including several esepecially begi games he had. In April he shot an even better .443 in threes, including some more big games like the 10 point Sacremento win where he shot 7-9 in threes.

Then in the playoffs against Memphis he shot .375 in threes, including a one point win where he shot 4-5 in threes and was the main reason the Clippers won that game. His three point shooting was a big reason the Clippers got out of the first round.

Then in the San Antonio series where the Clippers got trounced, Foye shot an even better .625 in threes.

He wasn’t much the year before or even the firwst part of this season, but after the all star break, he found his way with threes and won weveral big games for the Clippers.

The Clippers have nobody who can shoot threes nearly as good as Foye was shooting them in March and April and in the playoffs.

Thos threes will be missed this season (two ways of looking at “missed”.

  Foye benifts from CP3 giving him open looks. At least one of the guys the Clippers signed will have an equal or better 3pt %.

  Foye basically got good at one thing only and that was spotting up to shoot 3′s. Outside of that, he was completely useless. For someone who has a similar build to Eric Gordon he should have been slashing and getting to the basket to draw fouls. He rarely drove to the basket. Once the Spurs figured that he wasn’t going to do anything outside of shoot 3′s, they guarded him closely and completely neutralized him. This team needs a guy who can do more than just shoot 3′s.

Been following this site for years and yeah, Demote they do have a point. Seeing that we all love the Clips, if the majority of people think DJ is serviceable then I don’t know maybe he is. Me I’d be impressed if you directed all that negative energy where it really belongs…VDN.
