Chris Paul and Blake Griffin showed off a different two-man game last night, charming the crowd on Jimmy Kimmel Live!. If I’m not mistaken, they’re the first athletes to appear since the show moved to its 11:35p time slot (that probably only matters to you late nite wonks).

As great as this team is right now, I wonder what everyone thinks of this trade. I ran this in the trade machine and this helps both teams.

LAC sends Caron Butler and Lamar Odom to Memphis for Rudy Gay. It helps Memphis dump Gay’s salary to avoid luxury tax penalties in two years and then helps them get bigger on their front line. LAC gets more younger and more athletic at the SF spot where Gay can guard three to 4 positions and we get another guy who can create his own shot in the starting unit. Plus, Gay is deadly in transition and gives CP3 another finisher for his pinpoint lobs.

  Only downside is that you’d be adding money to the Clippers cap cus Odom’s salary comes off the books next year. Depends if it will be harder to resign CP3. I’m not sure Memphis would do that either.

    Andrew Han, can you please check this for me if it is possible? I think that even with Rudy Gay, we can still give CP3 money but he would have to sacrifice some money on the table and essentially take the same amount of money Blake Griffin got on his max contract deal and we could resign our free-agents in Barnes, Hollins, Turiaf, We could also find other guys who would be willing to take veteran minimum deals. That would also require waiving Willie Green and Trey Thompkins.

      I understand the value of adding a Rudy Gay type of player but there’s no way that the Clippers would even consider this considering how much Lamar adds to this team in terms of leadership and chemistry… not to mention his ever increasing value as a defensive player and playmaker with the ball in his hands.

        I think its the other way… No way memphis trades away Gay for Odom and Butler. Gay may be overpaid but he is still easily a top 5 Small forward in the league. Two veteran players who are past their prime, although I love both of their games for the Clippers but realistically that their value, are not going to net in a 26 year old top 5 small forward.
        
        If such a trade was offered to the clippers I would hope they take it.

      Do I still reply to this? Projected CP salary + Griffin + Gay + DeAndre = ~$61m. + Crawford = ~$66m. I’d guess the luxury line goes up to ~$72m so that would give LAC ~$6m for everyone else.

      I remember when Memphis was willing to trade Rudy Gay pre-extended for Chris Kaman and we backed off. Memphis had cap space with guys still on rookie scale and could take on the difference in money. That would have been the better deal. Now we’d have to give too much just in salary to make a deal work.

        I meant before Rudy signed his deal, not like they already signed him and wanted to trade him.

  I pose this trade because Odom and Butler are not part of the future in terms of the Clipper core and Gay is in his prime. The team is in win-now mode and I think the starting 5 of CP3, Green, Gay, Griffin, Jordan would be the deadliest starting 5 in the NBA and moving forward in future seasons with whoever would fill the SG position would allow for a Willie Green type player there as the weak link. Right now, the SG and SF in the starting 5 are the weak links.

USA Today is speculating about the Clippers trading Butler and Bledsoe to Memphis for Rudy Gay, who is way overpaid. The Varejao trade rumor is more intriguing than the one about Rudy Gay.

Rudy Gay is getting paid $16 million this season, $18 million next season and $19 million the season after that. That’s Chris Paul or Dwight Howard salary. Rudy Gay is not that good. If the Clippers are going to pay somebody else that kind of money it should be Dwight Howard.

  I agree more or less. Eventually as in maybe this offseason we should trade Bledsoe but Rudy Gay kinda kills your financial flexibility, so it would be a high risk kinda move that we don’t really have to take when we have the best record in the league.
  
  Wouldn’t mind stealing dwight in free agency from the Lakers either.
