Think Vinny Del Negro is bad? Wait until they hire Byron Scott guys.
Byron Scott is a much better coach than VDN. You, myself, and eveyrone at CBL knows that.
The coach is always greener on the other side. Especially when VDN is on this side. I’d hold out for someone better than Scott. One of the Van Gundies for instance.
Or Nate McMillan
It was a sadistic ending to our best season in Clippers history. We expect WCF, but we fall very short. Now the season ending, what’s outlook can you see in Clippers future? Will this affect CP3 decision to stay here? Is it for sure thing that VDN is out of Clippers coach?
Congrats to the Memphis Grizzlies team! Well fought series and well deserve. Best of luck for all of them.
So Chauncey nearly had as much minutes as crawford and bledsoe together. WHY?
My forehead hurts from breaking my desk in half with it. Vinny has to get the axe, right guys? Also why was Billups out there? Billups, Caron, and DJ need to go. This team needs serious changes. A competent coach would have made a big difference. So do you expect there to be some big changes?
Here is a list of some free agents for the Clippers:
PG Chris Paul
SG Chauncey Billups
SF Matt Barnes
PF Lamar Odom
C Ryan Hollins
C Ronny Turiaf
Based on the playoffs and the end of the season, who should the Clippers being back?
I think they should bring back Paul (obviously), Barnes, Odom, and Turiaf. Chauncey has been a complete failure, and Hollins still sucks.
Add on Willie Green to that too. I think they should keep him.
Really sad end to the season! So hard to see Bledsoe and Crawford on the bench while Hill, Green, and Chauncey were on the floor. I dont understand how VDN could lose faith in Crawford so quickly after he started 0-5….. Tough loss
Donald sterling could have let me coach for than run VDN put on. Smh
And why didn’t Jamal crawford play the entire second half????
Everybody loves Vinny.
Kudos to VND for leaving Billups in the game when he lost the ball in a possession that could have cut the lead to 5/6 points and bench Bledsoe 20 secs after he entered the game because of a turnover. I mean, who needs a great perimeter defender on the floor when the opposing team is making three after three? That’s great coaching right there. That and leaving Crawford on the bench for the entire second half. Pure genius!
I also liked CP3′s impersonation of Dwight Howard. Well done, sir, well done.
Much like John Stockton, when he was playing, Chris Paul has become THE BAD BOY of Point guards. The stupid retaliatory fouls in game 5 when he stumbled then just shoves someone in the chest to compound his failures. To follow that up with tonight’s display of even worse poor sportsmanship should be embarrassing to Clipper management, just like Rasheed Wallace was a virus in Portland, CP3 will become the virus in LA if he’s re-signed.
CP3 is a great player, but I would NEVER want a thug like that living in my city and I will never CHEER HIM, unless he cleans up his game. STATE FARM should be wondering about their ads, right now!
Nah, I think you are overreacting to this and you are living in a dream world. For me, what counts is that he tried really hard and he gave his heart to pu the Clippers on track, was he perfect? No, but in pros and cons, I can say that there are way more pros than cons. I wish the system wasn’t so centered on him handling the ball all the time, but I wonder what would you do when the game plan from the coach is go out and play. CP3 may have made some mistakes but to throw all of that on him and to say he is a virus, that he has poor sportsmanship? That’s ridiculous, he is a competitor. Mj, for instance, he was a big time competitor, to the point he was annoying, but he was no saint either, but from that to what you got, you are really exagerating.
CP3 a thug? Do you know anything about him? How would you feel if you tried you very hardest at your dream and failed because of other people? Fail because you have a horrible unqualified boss and half your co-workers do nothing. We’re all mad, but let’s directed our anger at the right people……
and more, if he was such a poor sportsmanship, virus and a thug, why would him greet the other team players before exiting? No such a bad boy and thug does that.
I can’t believe that at the end of the 4Q the Clippers managed to get
both Z-Bo AND Gasol with 5 fouls and as they kept Z-Bo, how on Earth
the Clippers didn’t aggressively attacked both of them until they fouled
out?!?! Wasn’t that the thing that worked for the Clips in the Game 1 and 2??
Gasol was showing how afrid of fouling out he was, he became a breach for the Clips attack, I still can’t believe they didn’t put Griffin to attack him, or anyone else.
Was Crawford hurt or something? If not, there is nothing that justifies him being out of the 2nd half of the game, he was 0-5? Yes, but then what!? Cold start doesn’t mean anything, like he already proved so many times.
Why did VDN keep Billups, if he was already with Green – that BTW should had played way before in this series, do you wait to the Grizz turn the series 2-3 to try to make adjustments?!?! If he was already using Green, why not with Crowford at the 3? Billups commited basically 2 consecutives TO and yet, he kept him instead of going for Crawford, it doesn’t make any sense at all.
When CP3 was gone, why not use Griffin? I know he is hurt and it was already a 10 point game and maybe it wasn’t worth it but it’s the Game 6, another 2 minutes wouldn’t hurt, he should at least tried something? It just felt like he gave up. The Celtics were down 26 and they made a 20-0 run when nobody believed, I know that VDN is far from being Doc Rivers but giving up? I couldn’t stand it.
Please, just make VDN gone before next week if that’s possible, the fast they get a capable coach, the greater the chances to assure that CP3 will stay. I’m pretty much sure he will stay, even more after he said that the Clips wouldn’t have money to keep Bledsoe next season, because the one way to look at it is that he was already giving a hint that he will land a big contract with the Clippers. But who knows, who knows…
There are tons of coaches out there, right? Van Gundy Bros., Jerry Sloan, Avery Johnson, Lawrence Frank, Nate McMillan, Byron Scott and so on… It was already hard when they decided to give VDN his extension, but if they hire him back or manage to some how get something worse, c’mon! Well CP3 has been the GM and Coach of this team so, as long as he stays, I hope he will guarantee a better coach.
I think today’s loss was more about Memphis playing out of their minds and less about rotations or schemes. Doesn’t matter who was out there when they shoot like that. I wouldn’t be surprised if we play Memphis next year in the 1st round. What does the CBL crew think we should acquire to match up better with Memphis next season?
They shot like that or they were allowed to do that? What about the other end of the floor? This is really about X’s and O’s.
How realistic is it that Stan Van Gundy is the Clipper coach next season?
That was awesome! Maybe we should hang VDN in the rafters to celebrate!
Michael Eaves and the post game guys said that the Clippers had the better roster but didn’t win the series. They talked about VDN’s potential resigning with the Clippers and the only guys who made it sound like he would resign was Smith.
We are all disappointed in the loss , however can the early exit actually be a good thing for the future of the franchise since a coaching change is so badly needed?
I’m betting on that. I already stated that before, if this is the cost for getting rid of VDN, I will painfully take it.
I think it’s ridiculous that Matt and Grant Hill can guard Z-Bo and Gasol better than DJ. I’m proud of Blake, he made a pretty good leap with his defense this year, can’t wait for next year. CP3 tried his best all series, I don’t blame him for letting his emotions spill over at the end. VDN has no idea how to coach a good team, and he’s weak. Billups pretty much cost the game in crunch time. It’s embarrassing VDN can’t tell him to shut up and sit on the bench, his prime is over. DJ’s defense and maturity is cringe worthy, I really hope they get rid of him…
You can’t blame it all on DJ. VDN never gave DJ the reps in the regular season and to expect him to perform in the playoffs when he didn’t build up his confidence and grow in the year is not on him but on VDN because VDN set DJ up to fail.
You’re right..I can’t blame the student if the teacher is unqualified.
And that’s all weird because when the season started and in good games, they gave the ball to DJ and he showed some moves and improvements but as the season continued, VDN was giving him less and less but at the same time, DJ inability at the FT% was really a down side as well, so.
I just don’t see how Blake and DJ can play together unless one of them decides to focus on rebounds. Old school, tough rebounding, they both can’t have that “glamour” role. Hopefully a new coach can teach him how to rebound and help his confidence.
I’ll even agree here. DJ might not be that great, but he’s not the reason they lost.
I don’t think that the Clippers will be able to get rid of DJ so easily, I would love if they could get Pekovic, for instance, the Clips need another big man to pound inside, to get rebounds AND one that can shoot FT and be reliable in the end of games. Who would they trade DJ for?
Game five at Staples was the important one the Clippers needed to win. Oh well, time to go fishing. Too bad.
I’m sad about the loss too. But what really put the nail on the coffin was Chris Paul getting ejected in the exact same matter that Dwight Howard was ejected when the Lakers got swept by the Spurs a week ago. It was a symbol that Chris Paul was leaving the Clippers, and Dwight Howard may leave the Lakers too. L.A. sports is doomed from this point forward.
There are a few positives. The Clippers finally got some respect with a 17-game winning streak and a perfect December, a winning road record, their first ever Pacific Division (probably their only one ever, I’m afraid), and a complete dominant sweep over the Lakers in the regular season. Right now, they are a good regular season team, but a bad playoff team who lacks fundamentals, discipline, and a system. A real coach like Phil Jackson would have transformed the Clippers into VR Troopers.
But this is Memphis’s day in the sun. When Chris Paul beat the Grizzlies with a hero ball lay-up in Game 2, it brought back horrible memories of the Game 1 Miracle Comeback where they suffered a horrendous upset. They used as motivation to beat the Clippers, and by conquering their fears, the Grizzlies won the series. I tip my hat off to these bears. And to Jerry “The King” Lawler, one of my favorite commentators from the old days of WWE/WWF. Congrats to the Grizzlies.
As for the Clippers, I hope they learned some valuable lessons. When there’s a clear path to the second round, you need to take full advantage of it, don’t squander. There were times in the season where they had leads, went on cruise control, lost the lead, and lost the game. Second, they need a true coach as how I described it. Finally, never take lottery teams seriously. When they lost to the Golden State Warriors in the first weeks of the season, they took them lightly and ignored them as just another lottery team. This faux mentality gave the Warriors confidence like never before, and not only allowed them to beat the Clippers, that game turned the Warriors into title contenders. They have a date with the Spurs in the second round, while the Clippers have an extended off-season to think about what they’ve done.
Sorry if I’m being critical, but this is just my opinion.
No, it was nothing like D12, even more because the Clippers managed to stay close because of him, you can’t put that on him and take everything else good that came with him and just balance that ejection, which, BTW was much more of an acting from Gasol than an ejection. Even the commentators were surprised at how that became an ejection. When Barnes overreaction was much more on what a tech would be like.
The real question we should be asking ourselves right now is:
Who do we pick at 25?
I got a whole list of players, if we trade Bledsoe a point guard, if we don’t a shooter(SG/SF)
I think Myck Kabongo is going to be a special player.
wow, coach ! win or go home. everyone but you sees value in Billups. even the commentator at the 2 minute mark of the 4th said Billups made more turnovers than assists in the “series” ! players win games, coaches lose them – ur words. SERIOUSLY !
Poor Willie, seriously, that guy played hard all year. Billups is way past his prime and Willie gets kicked down to end of the bench. Even in this game, Willie played better in his short stint, but oh no, VDN goes with Billups AGAINNN
What is out chance of getting caron and billups gone and signing AI in free agency to get our all star defensive stopper we have been looking for? If a magic 8 ball replaced vinny del negro, would this post season run have gone better or worse?
Al would ask too much, I prefer getting DJ gone instead of Caron and get Pekovic.
That was one of the worst coaching performances I’ve EVER seen(Vinny Del Negro) EVER. Anyone else worried about Cp3 not doing the press conference with Blake, WTF?
wooow, that charlotte comment was cold DJ
Clippers are no better than a second round team with this lineup. If CP3 doesn’t come back, this isn’t even a playoff team.
I do not know if you listen to CP3 press conference, but he sound understandable piss. You think he is leaving? I pray not!
yup…took shot at vinny…should not have been with backs against wall…
If he wants to win, he’s gone. If he wants more money he’ll stay. I’m guessing he wants to win.
Clipper bigs have proved useless in the playoffs. Clippers are not going to win unless something drastic is done. Best case, bledsoe and Jordan for Pierce and Garnett? Even then, Clippers wont’ win
Blake did a good job, Z-bo and Gasol are season vets, and he’s in his 3rd year. After how bad his defense was last year, he’s better, and he wants to keep getting better. Who knows what a great coach could do with DJ and Bledsoe.
Clippers need to fire VDN tomorrow to have any chance of keeping CP3.
Can we trade Blake Griffin for Kevin Love. Love would be a better fit with DJ and CP3…
Griffin did a great job and he’s improving. Love already meet his peak. So no.
His dunks sell tickets. NO WAY Sterling would ever give him up.
Remember Elton Brand? Anything can happens.
VDN played like 6 years under Popovich, master of running a high percentage “system.” Yet, after 2 seasons with a core nucleus, Clips run very few sets. Why?
VDN actually played for Pop for 2 years and that was Pop’s first two years as coach of the Spurs. I asked this a few months ago on CBL even called it in to KFWB. I personally believe there is a difference between coaching under someone as an assistant vs. playing under someone. Coaching under someone gives you privy information to the decision processes and to understand the sets and how to run the team. As a player, you only know how to run the sets and sure you can think of how to add a wrinkle but you do not get to hear what the assistants and the head coach talks about and how they scout other teams.
One more question. What do you think about Gary Sacks GM situation?
Jordan – I’m not quite sure which part of your comment about the blame being placed on Chris Paul we’re supposed to find revolutionary. If you haven’t been thinking that all season long, where have you been?
I’m not sure why’d you look for fits next to Jordan. Jordan needs to go. At some point, his very high ceiling starts getting lowered. That point is quickly approaching. He’s so-so man-to-man defender. He’s an almost useless offensive player. What he brings is a willingness to run and athletic ability. Problem is, Chris Paul doesn’t like to run (which is, btw, a problem he really needs to fix). Jordan is a bad, bad fit for this team.
Blake Griffin vs Kevin Love (Mix) HD
I really think that Griffin can have a break out year if he has the right coach, one that knows how to use his skills set. Just throwing him on the block is definitely not the best way, even more how when that becomes predictable.
PROPS DJ for calling it like it is. VDN”S the problem THANKS
1) VDN has to go. That’s a given
2) Chris Paul needs to stop meddling and give up control. It doesn’t work out when a player has so much input on everything the organization does. Take it from a Cavs fan, it killed us giving LBJ so much control so early. He’s learned, but it took him leaving to see it.
3) Jordan either needs to take a big leap, or get traded. He just doesn’t fit with Griffin.
You have to give CP3 whatever he wants or he won’t resign.
There’s still hope for DJ, just find a coach who knows how to use him and Blake properly and this team will meet its potential.
Sorry we didn’t get to a ton of questions guys. Thank you guys for watching as always, we’ve had a blast doing these and talking with y’all all season. We’ll probably look back on this year as a failure given the talent, but hopefully it leads to some changes I think we all have realized need to be made.
Great work as always, I enjoy your hard work and analysis and the interactions you have with everyone on Twitter!
Thank you guys for all the work you did during the regular season with CBL and the roundups. You guys put out a lot of quality work and I hope I speak for everyone by saying we really do appreciate it.
Sad ending for this squad. I didn’t get to watch. The Clippers needs are apparent though. New Coach..Better 2 way players..Crawford/CP combo equals? Disaster! Too much dribbling! Wait? I said that last year.. Defense wins..Again..CP over rated in terms of his skills benefiting his team mates. BUT HE JUST WANTS TO WIN. THEN WIN DAMN IT! Ill say it again. ” Make this Blake’s team” If that means CP has to go? So be it! Of course. That won’t happen.
Just wanted to say, that as a Grizz fan, I have watched the last three of these live events. The work you guys do is great, and all the points you make are valid. It has really helped me see the series in a light I never could have imagined had I merely focused on information coming from the Grizzlies media. I wish the Grizzlies TrueHoop blog would do stuff like this. That being said, great series, great fight, and let’s hope the rivalry only continues to intensify as the next seasons progress.
