Before each home game this season, ClipperBlog will run “ClipperBlog Eats,” a restaurant recommendation from its resident restaurant reviewer, Ben Mesirow. Below is today’s suggestion:
With so much importance placed on the NBA’s long offseason – the draft, free agency, contract extensions, summer league – it’s easy to forget how great the actual season is. One of the best parts of the actual season is going to games in person, and one of the best parts of going to games in person is pre-game eating, drinking, and making merry.
For the home opener we wanted to suggest some place festive, someplace fun, someplace relatively convenient to Staples Center, and, most importantly, someplace quintessentially LA. There is no place that better meets these criteria than Guelaguetza.
A legendary Oaxacan restaurant on an odd strip of Olympic in Koreatown where the mood is always jovial and the mole flows like viscous, delicious water, Guelaguetza suits this occasion like no other. The large open room and banquet-style tables make any night a party, and when the cumbia band starts kicking and those impossibly complex, rich, and fragrant moles (in any of their five distinct varieties) hit the table, the only thing to worry about is whether you’ll remember there’s a game at all.
