Before each home game this season, ClipperBlog will run “ClipperBlog Eats,” a restaurant recommendation from its resident restaurant reviewer, Ben Mesirow. Below is today’s suggestion:
Tonight, the Clippers face off against one of the most influential players this blog has ever seen. No, not Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, or Manu Ginobili, though those guys are cool too—no, tonight ClipperBlog Eats is most concerned with the legendary Matt Bonner: Sandwich Hunter.
It is in his honor that today we’d like to recommend the venerable Giamela’s in Atwater Village. It’s just a tiny little box on Los Feliz Boulevard, but inside are some of the baddest, most muscular sandwiches in LA, broad-shouldered monsters piled high with meats, cheeses, sauces, and hefty scoops of vegetables – onions, pickles, and giant chunks of fresh tomato. This is no fancy sandwich shop with carefully portioned nibbles of rare cheeses and obscure salami, Giamela’s serves the kind of heavy-duty sandwich that could double as a support beam in your house. It’s almost impossible to eat in one sitting but it’s somehow even better on the car ride home after the game. It’s the kind of sandwich that we think Our Boy Bonner would dig. Maybe it isn’t the Hoagie Grail, but for tonight it’s close enough.
