Before each home game this season, ClipperBlog will run “ClipperBlog Eats,” a restaurant recommendation from its resident restaurant reviewer, Ben Mesirow. Below is today’s suggestion:
With the explosive popularity of kale and quinoa and acai and gluten-free plant-based build-your-own-wholly-unsatisfying superfood bowls it has never been easier to feel guilty as hell about eating what you like. Somehow some of us merry few manage to soldier on, turning the other cheek to the new raw juice place on the corner, our resolve thick as our thighs while we stride once more into the pizzeria. For those of you who need an excuse to eat something heavy, though, here you go: the Pelicans are in town, and a massive cheesesteak from Boo’s makes for a fitting tribute to America’s most indulgent city, a glorious jazz funeral for your left ventricle.
It may not really be convenient to Staples, and it may be about the most flagrantly unhealthy food item you can reasonably obtain, but it’s worth using the NOLA excuse for Boo’s. Their cheesesteaks are huge and impeccably proportioned, a massive mound of finely chopped and generously seasoned beef cooked on a flattop with onions and thrown on an Amoroso roll, then absolutely coated with cheese whiz (yes, coated is the appropriate proportion). All together it makes a glorious sandwich, gratuitously salty and fatty and deeply comforting. If you really must, you can get it with mushrooms and/or peppers, with provolone instead of whiz, or with marinara sauce and mozzarella, but if you’re going to do it you may as well do it right. And that classic cheesesteak wit whiz is absolutely right, whatever your conscience has to say about it. 4501 Fountain Ave, Los Angeles, CA; boosphilly.com
