Best wishes to Shaun. The Clippers should consider making a post trade deadline / waiver wire deal with the T-Wolves and get Marko Jaric back in a Clipper uniform. T-Wolves would be happy that's for sure and perhaps it will save Marko's career. It seems to be the Clippers' best option; and Marko's game will sure help; at 6'7" he can help fill Shaun's shoes.

As far as blaming this on not playing in college, i think that argument is rubbish. If anything, this injury will tell college kids that you would want to jump to the nba ASAP because you never know when a "freak accident" may happen that could hurt your career (and paycheck).
The Clips are in a tough situation now, and i'm not even talking about playing basketball. Shaun will be a restricted free agent after next year, and more than likely will not have played basketball til then. Do you re-sign him or give up on one of the most promising young hopefulls with an injury track record. I know i'm getting ahead of myself with all of this, but at least it gives me something to think about rather than that awful image burned into my head.
I still think the Clips could do some damage (no pun intended) and make the playoffs.

SHAUN LIVINGSTON will surprise himself & all of us by recovering from this injury within 10 months. Physically he'll get tougher & gain more weight by the time he recovers 100%.

According to HoopsHype, we just signed Will Conroy to a 10 day contract. He was playing for the Tulsa 66ers and went to the University of Washington and his DraftExpress.com profile (from 2005) says his best case is Eric Snow and his worst case is Mateen Cleaves:

Willis McGahee.

His knee was destroyed in the Fiesta Bowl. I doubted that he would ever play again.

These young athletes recover fast nowadays, especially with the advances in arthroscopic medicine.

My bet is that he will recover. This will stunt his growth as a player even more.

Shaun's body type makes him susceptible to these type of injuries. He is tall and lanky, a true ectomorph with long limbs. I have a similar build. My knees are just not as stable as shorter, stouter guys.

This event will have repercussions on many people.

In trying to think of injury comparables, McGahee was the first guy I thought of. But for every McGahee there is a Jay Williams. How did his comeback go?

Not trying to be pessimistic just pointing out the obvious that, until his surgery is complete (and hopefully a success), and he begins actual rehab... we will have no clue how this goes down.

This is so incredibly depressing. Poor kid my heart goes out to him.

Also how did Shaun, who only committed to Duke, get hit with the "Duke-PG-Career-Ending-Injury" curse? Totally f'ed god I hate this.

Daunte Culpepper and Willis McGahee both tore their ACL, MCL and PCLs.

Carson Palmer tore his ACL, MCL and Medial Meniscus.

Palmer was back and effective the following season. Culpepper played the following season but wasn't effective. McGahee took a year off, but came back and played effectively after that. Also, keep in mind the fact that pro football is more demanding on the knee than pro basketball.

That is huge...........the career threatening aspect of the injury has to do with artery and nerve damage (patriots running back robert edwards is a good example of this), so hearing that makes me feel a lot better.

As someone who is just getting through ACL rehab, its a serious injury. Adding the PCL, MCL and meniscus, its a clusterf$#k. I think the Clippers are best to progress as if he's done, as the Suns pretty much did with Amare, and the Magic with Hill. If he can come back sometime midway through next season or 08/09, then great, but better to not be in a hole if he can't. Draft a point guard.

I think recovery is certainly possible - but this will hinder him in ever reaching his full potential. He can still be a very good player and is a natural talent.

I think what it comes down to is the mental part of it, how determined is someone coming off an injury like this to come back as close to 100% as possible. And when you do come back, are you able to ignore the past and play with no fear. Unfortunately we won't really know that side of it until he sees the court again.

In my hometown of Adelaide there's an Aussie Rules Football player called Trent Hentschel who did exactly the same thing last August. Last week he had his third reconstructive surgery and he's now walking again, He's the same age as Livingston albeit shorter (6'4) and much stronger. His doctors have said he's probably at leasy another year away but he will be back and his knee will be more solid than it was previously.

I know some out there like to think positively, but 10 months. That's nuts. No athlete ever recovered in that time from such an injury. If he's playing in the 2008-2009 season he'll be lucky. This was a Barbaro type injury. Thank God they operate on basketball players and don't shoot them. All we can do is hope for the best.

IMO, Shaun is looking at 12-15 months before he is NBA-ready. It is possible to come back faster but complications often arise with multiple structural injuries in the knee.

Prognosis depends on many factors:

(1) the associated knee injuries and the interventions for those injuries. (Bad for Shaun)

(2)Did he injure the popliteal artery? (occurs in a third of all cases)

(3)Did he suffer nerve injury (most commonly the peroneal nerve)?

(4) Viability of the limb in the presence of vascular compromise is directly related to the time between injury and revascularization. In extreme cases, a lack of immediate surgical intervention can lead to loss of sensorimotor function.

Complications

(1) The most common residual effects are arthrofibrosis (knee stiffness) and postoperative arthritis.

Operative treatment may increase the incidence of arthrofibrosis unless reconstruction is strong enough to allow early ROM.

(2) Neurologic deficit: Nerve injury, most often the peroneal nerve, is a common sequela of knee dislocation.
Recovery may take months to years, and prognosis varies.

(3)Knee instability:
Secondary to injury to the ligamentous structures.

(4)Posttraumatic arthritis:
Secondary to cartilage injury during the trauma. Can lead to long-term disability

At this point, Denver pretty much implodes. I had Ralph and Mike on in the back, with the ESPN feed in the kitchen. While I was fixing some dinner during the third quarter, all I could hear was Tom Tolbert calling the series for the Clippers on account of the Nuggets' disheartened play. Musburger laments a poor playoff performance by Denver; Carmelo is the invisible man, etc, etc, etc.
