The National Post [Canada] [via PA SportsTicker] uses the conditional "could" in the body of the story, but the headline suggests it's a fait accompli:

Clippers to buy out Cassell

The Los Angeles Clippers could buy veteran point guard Sam Cassell out of the remainder of his contract as early as Tuesday, according to reports.

Cassell told the Los Angeles Times that talks have been ongoing and that he could soon leave the team, most likely to sign for a contender such as the Boston Celtics or Phoenix Suns.

The Boston Globe reported that a buyout is imminent.

"They've been discussing it, so what more can I say," Cassell said in the Times. "Both parties are getting to a number and saying, 'Okay, this is what we'll do it for.' I just want to be treated fairly."

According to the Times, the Clippers had sought to trade the 38-year-old Cassell before last Thursday's deadline, but a multi-player deal to get forward Mike Miller from the Memphis Grizzlies fell through.

Cassell, who was an All-Star in the 2003-04 season, is in the final season of a two-year contract and is owed another $6.1 million, according to the Times report.
