Kaveman had a helluva game but could not get it done at the end.
I blame dunleavy for not giving kaman more time at the end of games. He is not used to being a clutch player but he will get there if given the trust.

One big choke. I've been watching this shit all season and at the end of the day, the problem is MD.

This team has no direction, no solid starting line-up and no leadership.

MD and staff: Go down the hall to the purple and gold room and take a look. That's what a fucking coaching staff looks like.

Shaun: What's keeping you from going out and buying the Magic Johnson video? What the fuck are you so confused about. You're supposed to be the fucking point guard.

Corey: We can't trade you, because nobody wants you. Your game is a joke and with Josh Smith putting your shot in the 3rd row, you could at least pretend you were going to play defense. You're all talk Corey. And the rest of the league knows it.

Sam: That camera shot of you during a time out at the end of the game, showed us an old, tired, depressed point guard. High school Shaun is not the answer, but your days are over.

TT: At the end of the day, you're just a tall guy from Paterson, NJ, with a decent shot and a bad attitude. I want to throw-up every time I walk in the Adidas store at Ontario Mills and see your face. But hey, why play defense when you're, "gettin' paid" anyway.

Cat: The only one with heart last night. Good game.

My brain hurts. I didn't watch the game last night. But I did check the score on my phone and saw we had a comfortable lead. No way the Hawks can pull themselves back into the game. Not with Kaveman doing his thing. Surely, we are better than that. I agree with Tommy, at least this will weed out the bandwagon fans because you have to be nuts or a truly devoted Clipper fan to watch this team this season.

Also, HowieJaye post, "Shaun: What's keeping you from going out and buying the Magic Johnson video? What the fuck are you so confused about. You're supposed to be the fucking point guard."

Can I get more complete ineptitude like that please? The box score doesn't include the 6+ shots he altered or the fact that he was just about completely perfect on the defensive end. Just about as close to a perfect game as you can ask from someone.

Bit of a catch-22 for the pro-Maggs/anti-MDSr crowd today. By far his biggest mistake Coach made last night was giving Maggette minutes. I see he was only credited with 3 turnovers in the official score, but you can double it at least if you consider he was involved in so many questionable passes in traffic. 3 foot chest highs in a crowded lane can be tough to catch. And how many FTA did he generate for the other team? The tech he was called for alone erased his personal total.

What did Q do in 20 minutes? Not alot, but he definitely didn't hurt the team. Sometimes that's good enough.

How many minutes until Cat finally breaks? 47.4. Now we know.

I don't really know what Shaun did wrong in you folks' eyes. He scored 4 points on the final possession before haltime. It was his squad that opened up the game to begin with, mostly in spite of Corey. Given 40 minutes he may have come close to 16-5-6-5-5. He blocked a shot in a crucial possession against one of the best scorers in the league. The only turnover he committed he promptly ran down and stole the ball back leading to an easy fast break 2.

It was Sam chucking ill-advised PUJITS and turning the ball over to Josh Smith.

Childress and Johnson are awesome for wearing Jordan V's.

Dunleavy was the problem last night like he has been with many losses this year. When a player has a hot hand in the first half, for some reason Dunleavy doesn't realize he should call plays for said person.
Last night, Cat got 2 shots in the 4th quarter. Not because he was hurt, because Dunleavy is stupid. After the game Cate complained about not getting the ball in the 4th, which is exactly why the Clippers lost, bad coaching. Countless times this season Elton has had 20 points in the first half and then 2 in the 2nd half because they stop going to what works. I hate Dunleavy, but sadly he's not going anywhere. I'm glad we lost last night and have a week before the trade deadline to think about doing something because this team is going to the lottery and fast. Well, personally i want the lottery, because even if we do make the playoffs it'll be a quick exit, but then again the last time we were in the lottery we picked Yaroslav Korolev, so basically with Dunleavy we're screwed either way.

Um. You're not serious about this are you? I won't argue about whether or not coach made the right decision. But seriously? You think its a good idea to force-feed the ball to an injured player? Especially one with a groin strain? Thats curious. At best.

Countless times this season Elton has had 20 points in the first half and then 2 in the 2nd half because they stop going to what works.
I don't buy this. I don't see Dunleavy (or any other coach for that matter) drawing up 20 ft jumpers for Cassell, Mobley, Maggette, or Thomas at the expense of posting Elton. This is merely a symptom of a larger problem. That being the lack of consistent conscious execution. Those 20 pt first halves don't materialize out of the ether, they're a byproduct of pre-game preperations. Unfortunately the Clips have been unable to maintain their focus and stay with the game plan. Its small things like not setting the solid back-pick, giving up the dribble early, not selling-out/talking on defense. Small innocuous actions during the game that coalesce and (as we have seen) can metastasize. Lighten up guys. Not every game chat or thread has to be a post-mortem. As good/bad as this team has been all year, they will most likely get into the playoffs, and might even end up with the same seeding as last year.

MD is a horrific game coach. No one mentioned this one. 31 secs to go, Hawks ball, Kaman has 12 boards and 6 blocks at that moment, no Brand, Coach DUNCEleavy decides this would be a good time to leave the only player on your team who can protect the basket on the bench. RESULT: Joe Childress drives to the basket for an uncontested lay in.

Please someone tell me what is the logic there?

Maggette, I am a huge supporter and think Q. Ross is a detriment, but last night CM was awful. DUNCELEAVY has now totally lost him. TT has reverted back to the dog he always was...he should give Steve Nash 1/2 of his $24M.

Why does coach DUNCEleavy start Q. Ross, but only plays him 15-20 minutes. If can't play starter minutes, why does he start?

Thanks for the completely unsolicited insult. My larger point still stands. firing Dunleavy solves nothing. Who do you think Sterling & Baylor will get to ride in on a white horse and save this season or the ones that follow? Stan Van Gundy? PJ Carlesimo? Larry Brown? What makes you think that anyone who fills coaches shoes is going to turn this thing around? Most importantly what makes you think that Sterling is going to eat Dunleavy's extension and pay the price it will take to hire a "name coach"? And for what? So a new coach can eek this team into the playoffs and lose in the 1st round? Dunleavy can and is doing that now, and he got to suffer through 3 sub-par seasons at underwhelming coaches wages to do so. No. Dunleavy is ensconced in the front office. Sterling & Baylor have hitched their wagon to Dunleavy and this roster. No amount of crying or name-calling is gonna change that.

It's Josh Childress. And you've all but stated the case on your own. With 31 seconds to go, ON YOUR HOME COURT, with your best post man out you don't leave your only good pivot in the game WITH 5 FOULS when you can still regain possession and you have the lead. You force a perimeter jumper by either packing in the paint or lax on-ball pressure. But what do I know right? ;)

Rick A. is on the right track.

I'm guessing he was also thinking about OT. If Kaman gets that foul and the game ends up going to OT, the Clippers have already lost. With Mobley already down they would be reduced to Shaun as the only player on the floor with a reasonable chance to score and play defense.

I don't like the move when behind, but tied AND definitely having the last shot its a reasonable decision. I won't say its the only decision, but given all information its perfectly reasonable.
Even if the Hawks score its not a disaster since the Clippers will have last shot and can tie. Giving up the two is not the end of the world compared to giving up the two AND losing the best player on your team if you achieve OT.
So the Hawks score, but its only two and you have the ball for last shot with 19 seconds remaining. Even knowing THAT if you could go back in time, I think you can make the reasonable case to take out Chris there. All I here is how much the fans want to see Singleton. Well, have you had your fill yet?

Unfortunately the Clippers didn't convert and there was alot in play there. There is no question Chris' second shot was basically a disaster of a mental mistake. Given that he was a large part of the reason they were in that game (the only other two being Cat and Shaun), its easily forgiven. Lets say he is heads up and makes a pass. Who else do you want taking that shot, ANY shot, based on what had transpired to that point in the game? Noone is perfect and as others have noted he does not have alot of experience in this regard.

Is it a worse mental mistake than Corey trying to draw a foul from beyond the arc with 4 full seconds left? I'll leave that to the reader to decide.

Rick A.,
While Cat did injur his hamstring in the 2nd quarter, as he said in a post-interview (in the LA Times), his "wrists were fine". He should have been given the ball more in the 4th quarter. If you are going to blame the injury, then blame Dunleavy for keeping an injured player in the game he's not going to use.
As far as game planning goes, I agree with you that Dunleavy is a good game planning coach, but I don't think he is a good game time coach, which I value in higher regards as a more important factor in NBA coaching.

As for Magette, I'm not surprised he tried to get the foul at the end of the game, because it is exactly what he tries to do the entire game from beginning to end, drive, or shoot, and throw his arms up in the air more blatantly than any other player i've ever seen. I like him, want him to stay, but his basketball IQ is like that of Kaman, which isn't too high, especially when it comes down to crunch time.

@ chris,
Lets take a look at what Cat did in the 4th:
1 AST, 1 REB, 1 FL, 1 TO, 2 FGA (1 3PA) 0 FGM. Cat played all but the last :19 seconds of the game. I think coach gave him ample PT to resume scoring, having scored 31 in the first 3 quarters I sincerely doubt he decided to go away from him. He might have seen Cat laboring in that last minute and pulled him. But considering that Cat seemed to have gone cold (missing a lay-up and forcing a 3PA with 8 ticks left) I don't find much fault in pulling him. As for running plays through Cat. Well, in a perfect world a coach could designate exactly who would take what shots and when. Unfortunately, things don't work that way. There are too many factors involved, opposing defenses make adjustments, other players can botch sets (TO's, lazy picks, forced shots), and keep a "hot" player from capitalizing on early success. This is not a new phenomenon.

As for game planning vs. game time coaching. Neither is necessarily a cure all for losing. Phil Jackson is roundly criticized for his game time decisions (substitutions, T.O. management). Eric Musselman is lauded for his pre-game preparation (practices) and attention to detail but he has yet to take a team into playoffs. You have to strike a good balance (of course it help if you have the players too ;p).

Look. Its a loss. And as such, we don't have much left to do but pick up the pieces and try to analyze what happened. It's frustrating, but its important to keep a clear head and a balanced outlook on the season. There are 29 winnable games left and the Clips are still in the hunt. Lets try and enjoy ride, eh?
