I didn't see the game, I heard cassell got ejected. What for?

he got ejected for a flagrant 2 foul on Rondo. He basically took a swing at his head while he was going for a lay-up. Even Ralph said that it looked like an intentional flagrant and that he wasn't going for the ball. Guy got a bloody nose and it lit up the Clips who were leading in the 2nd quarter.

i think they played decently well. except for containing Rondo.

Too bad the boys wasted a great 3rd quarter and couldn't get it done in the fourth. But Kaman didn't get anywhere near enough touches and Thornton and Mobley (his 3 trays aside) had a horrible shooting night. The Clippers w/o Brand and Cassell basically have to play perfect ball in order to beat the top teams. And last night was good but far form perfect.

3 observations I had from last night:

1.I dont understand how you can be payed to play in the NBA and miss as many f*ckin open jump shots as Ross and Knight do on a nightly basis?!? My ultimatum as upper management- Improve and start making Js or ship their asses out.

2.Kaman needs help BADLY on the defensive end. There were so many plays I saw last night where the C's scored on second chance points after initially breaking through Kaman's first line of D. Once EB comes back to provide that second line of Defense, this is once again going to be one of the toughest front lines to score against in the NBA. Guaranteed.

3.My theory for Cassell's ejection:
A.Cassell has dinner with K.G. the night before the game discussing a possible trade to the Cs and reunion with his good friend.
B.Cassell realizes he needs to "light em up" to show the C's he's worth making a push for.
C.Rondo ends up "lighting Cassell up" instead making him look slow, old, and a major,major defensive liability. The Cs front office realizes they probably don't need Cassell as much as they thought they did.

D.Cassell swats at Rondo's head. Payback. Ejection.

Buyout. What exactly does this mean? The only way it would make sense to me is for CASSELL to "buy out" the remainder of his own contract so the Clippers could release him sans contract. Then the Celtics could sign him as a free agent. Could someone please explain this "buyout" situation. Who buys out whom?

Why not just do a trade for nothing and let the Celtics take over paying Sam under his current contract? Is there some salary cap problem with the this?

Mike, there is something called a salary cap in the NBA. You can't trade a guy who makes $6 million to a team that is at or over the cap, without taking an equal amount of salary in return.

A buyout is an agreement between the player and team to cut ties with each other for a specified dollar amount. The team always is the one paying.

I don't think so in this case. How would the Clippers be paying Sam to get out of his contract to move to the Celtics. I didn't think Sterling was that much into the Sam Cassell charity fund. The thought of the Clippers paying Cassell NOT to play for them is absurd. Talk about adding insult to injury.

Actually, Maggs has been playing GREAT the last few weeks.

My point from the start is that he's not a SMART basketball player, and that the $10 million or so per year it would take to sign him would best be spent on someone who can make heady plays when the game is on the line. He doesnt get along with the coach and doesnt play any defense. Shoot, for $15 million you can get gilbert arenas (mr. clutch, or even Marion-- a much better all around player---and all-defense EVERY year.)
Maggs is a great talent, good guy...I appreciate all his work the past 8 years. He will be a great cog on someone else's team.

ACD, why isn't the better solution to get rid of a coach who has at best a mediocre record and, more realistically, a subpar record of accomplishment. And, a coach who based on recent comments is both a liar and divorced from reality.

This should be funny: ACD, why don't you step up and name all the available small forwards who are a better deal than Maggette at 10 million. Marion is unhappy with his ridiculous salary of 16 million and wants another huge extension. Plus, Marion is a guy who has flourished, at least offensively, because of Nash and the Phoenix system. Put him somewhere else and he becomes a 14-16 ppg and 9 guy who really struggles to score. You can have Maggette and a really good guard for what Marion wants.

You are only in the majority in the Starbucks at Reseda.

ACD, perhaps you would rather MD bring in some scrub that can't play a lick but maybe is 'smarter' or more rather plays within MD's stupid ass telegraphed playbook to replace Maggette..but I'm not on that team.

You need players that can make plays to win in the NBA.

You need a coach that knows what to do with the talent provided to him.

And you also need a GM that can bring in talent to fill around the talent you already have.

The Clips have a decent core of players when healthy, but the team is severly lacking in the other two areas..coaching and management.

ACD, you're trying to run off one of the guys the Clips have that can make plays.

Here's a test for you Anti-Clippper. Please list for us all the small forwards in the NBA that are better than Maggette. And then, after you make your list, put up their salaries.

dunleavy aint going anywhere, unfortunately. q ross should not be resigned but for some reason dunleavy wipes his ass (trying with the toilet paper reference here) and will try to resign a non-scorer non-defensive stopper decent 8th man option. i love maggette, clippers need his scoring, but sadly, the most professional player in terms of not complaining about playing time or the coach will not be here next year, he will bolt to a high-tempo offensive team and flourish. with Cassell gone after this year too, that gives us an extra 14 million in cap space i believe to hopefully go after Arenas. What we really need is a point guard who can run the show, but there aren't any point stars available
(plenty available in the draft). Let Thorton take over the small forward spot next year. Elton aint going anywhere this summer, he's going to make too much money next year and will want to prove himself. The clippers will need to do something major this summer in order to keep elton around after next year though. if he bolts, we are back to square one, and i pray to God that Dunleavy is fired before he makes any more bad draft picks.

Many of them make more $$$ than Maggs--however for ALMOST every single one, they are superior overall players.

I never said Maggs was overpaid. But he aint worth no $10 million.

If i go through that list, i'd trade maggs for 95% of those guys. What about you?

Josh Smith and Jamison are not small forwards and I wouldn't take Smith over Maggette. Jamison is a high volume shooter and I wouldn't take him either.

You should just admit to yourself that you are a hater and irrational about Maggette for some known only to you reason.

Why don't you throw some hate at Cat Mobley? He makes more than Maggette and isn't half the player. He also was an embarrassing non-factor in the series that the Clipper lost to Phoenix while Maggette was the best player on the floor for several of the games. I recall one game where he scored about 30 on about 9 shots. He stepped up in the biggest games of his career while Mobley was absolutely pathetic in the playoffs. Look up the numbers on Mobley in the PHX series, they will shock you. He basically disappeared and fired up all manner of ill advised shots.

Throw some of that hate his way. Spread your hate around, it's not good to keep it going in one direction only.

Great post Chris, I agree with much of it. I don't think the Clippers have anything to worry about with regard to resigning Ross.

I think you made a great point about Corey's professionalism. He IS one of the most professional basketball players I have ever seen and that is a big reason why I like to watch him play. Imagine being a bona-fide 20 point per game scorer in the NBA and getting hurt and having your job taken by a guy who looks like he just escaped from a scurvy clinic in East Timor and who can't shoot to save his life to boot. Imagine being made a "6th Man" and sitting on the pine while others play ahead of you. I couldn't imagine handling that situation last year as well as he did. HE DOES NOT GET ENOUGH PROPS FOR THAT AND THE DUNCY DOES NOT GET ENOUGH CRITICISM FOR THAT EITHER.

The Clips could clear some cap room [though I urge them not to spend it on the Westside Rentals loon], and rid Staples of his once-endearing, but increasingly tiresome shtick. As I told Abbott this morning, I'd trade Darrell Bailey for a deli spread and three cubic liters of pre-jump-ball talc.
