Brand isn't going anywhere. His status wasn't dependent on getting a top 3 pick. He's going to opt out, sign a max contract with the Clips and be here for the next 6 years. Relax.

Why would he stay? Best case, we draft a rookie point guard, who Dunleavy will bench for 3/4 of the year behind Smush Parker, Knight and Dickau. In order for the Clippers to make the playoffs they need 2 very good free agents and a couple decent ones.

As soon as I saw the dunce's ugly mug at the draft lottery last night, I knew the Clips had no shot at a top 3 pick. That was more of the Clippers continued genius to send the most mush guy (save Elgin I suppose) to New Jersey for the results.

The issue is not whether the Clippers should give EB a max offer cause they most definitely will do so, it's whether EB will take Sterling's $$ for the next several years. The Clippers have no choice but to offer him a max deal this Summer if they want more than 10 fans in the seats come November.

If he opts out there'll be at least a handful of options for him, and the only card the Clippers have is they can pay him slightly more per year and add a year guaranteed. EB will have to weigh that against having a shot at winning a ring for a franchise that can actually do so, and not continually talk about it like the Clips.

With Chicago and Miami sitting pretty at the top of the draft board, and both having pieces that they can move to clear cap space, it's setting up that both should have enough cap space to sign an EB or equivalent this Summer.

Its obvious they are letting Livingston go from a purely financial perspective. They may be able to resign him for 2 years at 850k or something and see if he can still bloom. That would be the only scenario to keep him in. Ross should be gone too because theres no reason to pay out on him either. Dickau will be dropped. Smush Parker....someone really needs a bullet in the front office for that one.

Given that, you could also use Shaun with Corey for a sign and trade as well and that could give some salary flexibility as far as moving players.

We really need to get rid of Kaman, Thomas and Mobley. They take up enough salary to have another superstar on the team. Or at least some more serviceable role players.

The Clippers would do best I think in trading this first round pick and all the other problems off their roster. Declaring Brand, Thornton and Maggette the core, giving them the contracts they deserve and completing the picture through free agency. Guards grow on trees, and so do mediocre backup F/C's. Maybe some leverage exists with Memphis having so many point guards (some of them quite skilled) or a disgruntled Serbian FC with more potential than Kaman at about $3m less. I think id actually take that risk just for the potential upside and to gain the size and ability to dominate down low. Headcase that he is, he could benefit from being around a stable guy like Elton Brand. Besides, we could use the blocks and the boards and the size.

Id try to raid New Jersey's bench of Sean Williams and Marcus Williams, get them in LA with Corey, Elton and Al and that right there could be a playoff team....with a better coach obviously.

Weve gotta dump Cuttino, Tim and possible Chris though. They are dragging us down financially and through sporadic play. Kaman had some great moments last season, trading him while value is high is probably the best way to utilize him as an asset. With teams like New Jersey, Memphis and Philly sitting on a pile of super potential projects, i'd seriously consider moving picks and whatever i could to take a bet on a second-third year high-potential guy ready to bust out of their shell.

And quit dumping on Corey. I mean, the guy improves every single year and you guys still cap on him. That guy wants to win so bad its shameful you crap all over him. Yea, he does some stupid stuff, but hes gotten a tad smarter over the years and the guy is an animal when hes pissed off. He plays incredible defense when hes angry and will singlehandedly turn a game around through sheer will and determination. If he could play defense like that all the time and just continue to grow his offensive awareness he would take that next step. I know you guys saw how he was nurturing Al in the later part of the season, feeding him the ball and setting him up for plays and playing pressure D, he's got the skills, he just needs a coach that appreciates his game and elevates it. Not one that throws him on the bench to start Cuttino Blowme in his place to shoot 1/12 with 14 different pads and a disco ball hanging off his elbow.

I like Westbrook but he's not a true one or two in the NBA. He can defend both positions well but he's not a great ballhandler or shooter. If Dunleavy benched Jermaine Oniel for years in portland, there's no way a 19 year old rookie is going to get PT over Ross. But Dunleavy really doesn't matter cus they're not going to make the playoffs anyway without a major free agent.

Doesn't anyone on this blog think that the Clips should draft DJ Augustine? He's a little on the short side, but not much shorter than Nash, AI, or CP. He's quick, he's confident, he can shoot, he's tough, and he's creative. I think all you say about Livingston is that he is tall and creative (not tough, not confident, not a very good shooter, not quick).

Most of the teams with good to great point guards go somewhere. Have the Clippers ever had a really good point guard? At best, they have been above average. Look at the Clipper track record, look at their lack of really good point guards, and draw your own conclusions.

Augustin just doesn't strike me as a good pro. He doesn't really do anything exceptionally- he's solid all around but I can't point to any one thing and say that that will be his strength on the next level. He's a solid pick in the mid first round, but I just don't know if his talent equates to the 7th pick in the draft.

I really like the idea of taking a combo guard like Gordon. It leaves us options if we do decide to pursue a big time free agent PG. If we were to draft Augustin, all the sudden it wouldn't make any sense to go after and of those top PG's previously listed.

I think if Mayo or Gordon or on the board we gotta go that route.

None of us know enough to comment on the drafting of potential Clippers unless we have extensively watched the player in question play. Like I did with Thornton before he was drafted. I was on record for Thornton while the usual homers were chanting "Nick Young", Nick Yong. Kinda like the chants for Westbrook and Mayo. Now, I don't know enough about Westbrook to comment other than to note that he has impressed at some predraft workouts, but I haven't been impressed with Mayo. So, ultimately we have to leave it up to Clip management to make the informed decision based on watching tons of tape and being privy to personal workouts. All the blather on here is pure bunko.

From what I've read and seen, Westbrook seems like a legit defensive stopper. He's definitely raw and not as offensively talented as the other guards at the top of the draft, but by most accounts he's far and away the best defensive prospect in the draft.

I don't know. It seems like a good idea to me have someone who we can throw on guys like Kobe and Williams and CP3. Guess it depends on what you value more- a defensive stopper or a polished scorer. That's the Westbrook-Gordon debate, and I'm not sure which side I'm on yet.

All in all we're in a good spot. One of these 4- Bayless, Mayo, Gordon or Westbrook- should be there at pick 7. Ranking them is the hard part.

Ross and Westbrook will be the starting backcourt. I would never allow the Dunce to have Westbrook - EVER. Too much opportunity for the Dunce to play a limited player (like he does with Ross).

Westbrook may be great for some teams, but not the Clips. The Clips need a scoring PG who can knock down an outside shot to spread the floor and keep the defense from collapsing.

I am sure the Clips will take Westbrook now. The Dunce's butt boy ACD will love that.

It's not the coach's fault that TT couldnt make a 3 to save his life, or that Mobley aged 5 years over the course of 18 months. It's not his fault EB was out the whole year.

And also, although unpopular, i liked benching maggette's ass last year because he played ZERO defense. He was best suited guarding and scoring against 2nd string scrubs.

Ya ACD, but the dunce is the reason why T2 and Mobley are here in the first place. He's also the reason why we don't have Wilcox at the 4, and we have T2's sorry ass. My guess is having Wilcox on the front line last year would have been helpful, much moreso than having T2 brick three's and play matador D all damn year. Sure EB getting hurt was not his fault, but it is his fault that the Clips had no legitimate backup there. The dunce is also the reason why Q Ross or Dickau ever saw the floor in an NBA game, not to mention he is quite possibly the WORST at adjusting in-game as well as down the stretch in a close game. ACD, these are the things that us educated fans have seen enough of and why he is the dunce.

However... Almost EVERY team in the league has 1 or 2 bad contracts. Would i rather have Wilcox than TT? Sure. But at the time, the Clippers needed outside shooting and already had a starting PF in brand. Wilcox was entering restricted free agency and would have been too expensive to keep as a backup. Does anyone remember Vlad Rad and the impact he had in the playoffs? He had at least 2 or 3 stellar games (out of 12 games). That's good for a role player.

So Vlad left, and TT was coming off a SICK post-season. So they gave him 4 years, at 8 per. Not that unreasonable. Actually, he's a great role player when he doesn't have to play 35 min a game at PF.

You cant regret every move you make just because a player got better somewhere else. It happens in this league.

Mobley was another signing that worked out for a couple of years. We were all happy to have him here and knew that he would deteriorate over the duration of the contract. I remember it was an emergency signing when Arenas balked at the Clipp's offer... but we needed a 2 in the worst way, so we overpaid (as so many teams do).

As far as the PG situation goes, there are no answers. Would you rather have Jared Jordan or Dan Dickau run the show? It's a no-win situation. Sam got hurt, and was 103 years old, Knight was brought in as a backup, and SL was supposed to be back mid-year. What were the alternatives? Give me something please! They brought in Diaz, who sucked. They tried some D-League talent with D-League results. Do you think J-Kidd was coming here for Q Ross and a 2nd round pick?
Let it go guys... the team sucked do to many many issues. Q Ross playing 20 minutes a game didnt lead to their downfall.

I am not a blind admirer of the coach. I really think the team is in a good position over the next 2-3 years as long as EB returns.

You are no true fan. You are a fan of the coach. You hate every player on the team except Ross (for sure) and maybe Brand who you then went on to tell us was not an elite player.

I am a fan because I like certain players on the team, no other reason. The fact that I live in OC has absolutely no bearing on my affinity and the coach and the name on the jersey sure as hell is meaningless. I enjoy watching Brand, Maggette, Kaman (when his head is in the game and he is competing not tanking), Livingston and Thornton. Take away those players or the majority thereof and I don't watch and I don't make the occassional trek to Staples.

ACD..I guess some of us have the cognitive ability to see things that aren't in front of our faces. Unfortunately for us, your pal MD and Clips management do not possess this trait- cause if they did they wouldn't be constantly chasing their tail year after year.

With Wilcox, he was in MD's doghouse for years. It makes no damn sense to me why you would bench then trade a guy with his skillset and upside for Vlad Rad, even if he's a good shooter. Last I checked, winning teams don't have PF's that park at the 3 point line all damn game and play no D. Winning teams also don't back up the brinks truck for a career loafer in that of T2. He did the EXACT same thing the last time he was in a contract year, and then went on to suck the life out of the team that paid him. Hell dude, the Bulls cut his sorry ass, and then went on to have the Playoffs of his career and the dumbass Clips paid him. When you need a shooter, call me crazy, but I would have traded for say, maybe, a shooter that plays the 2.. not the damn 4.

Now the Clips are the ones paying the price, that was a dumbass signing and one that should have had heads rolling not be given extensions.

Mobley was a panic move for sure, and again, at that number, that's an absolutely horrendous signing.

So with these two bonehead moves coupled with a couple terrible draft picks gives you the Clips 2007-2008 result.

ACD, then you look at the PG situation and one can't help but know that just about anyone would have done a better job than MD and management the last several years. The sooner DTS realizes this, the better chance he has of getting the Clips back to at least the slightest bit of respectability around town.

..and one more thing ACD...the Clips STILL need outside shooting cause they can't afford to have T2 in the game cause he doesn't give you what a PF should.

So in essence, the Clips turned Wilcox into T2 and they had gaping holes at the 4 as well as the 2 and 1.

So ya man, not buying anything that MD and management is selling. They are all idiots and deserve the absolute mess they have on their hands.

The team needs a new GM first, someone who has the guts to fire MDSr based on his insubordination last year.

ACD's argument that Maggs should have been benched last year reflects his myopic pro MDSr view and lack of bball knowledge. The only other consistent scorer on the team was EB. You need at least two scorers on the floor at all times to be competitive. MDSr never realized that and got into a childish dispute with one of his players.

Well I probably wouldn't fire Dunleavy this year unless the Clippers get some better players and have a chance of winning.

According to Chad Ford, the clippers are looking to trade the 7th pick for a pg like ford. I don't want to trade for an injury prone player who is just okay for the 7th pick. I hope we don't do this

Mock drafts and rumors are extremely fun to read, but they are usually off base.

Does anyone remember reading anything about Brand for the #2 pick? Or recently--- the Shaq/Gasol trades... just seemed to appear out of thin air.

Funny thing if you go back and see the mock drafts from the last 3 years-- the speculators are usually wrong in most cases (except the obvious ones).

Still, i love Eric Gordon for the Clippers. I'm almost scared that he might get picked up before the #7 comes up.

Imagine the fun it would be to watch Thornton and Gordon run the break... If SL EVER gets back to himself, he finally has some finishers who can score (i.e. NOT Ross, Patterson)

Although everyone seems to think Gordon is a shooter, his stats, especially the second half of the year were less than imressive. Some would even go as far as saying he plain sucked the second half of the season. I'm in the latter category and don't like the notion of drafting a guy that struggled with his shot for the better (and latter) part of the college year. What happens when we're 40 games into the season and he has 40 some games left?

I wouldn't mind seeing the Clips trade the pick as long as they fill a hole in the back court.

But they'll probably trade the pick or draft a guy that 'plays' one position but would rather play another like T2.

We can say that Wilcox, who will ask for 8-10 million this year, is a nice player, but not an all-star and not worth keeping over EB. So the gamble for a real shoooter was worth it at the time. Wilcox was in the doghouse for a reason--he doesnt hustle (all the time) and he plays soft for a PF of his skill and size.

TT took everyone for a ride.. and again, i think he's a great role player and not GROSSly overpaid.. he's worth about 6 per to play 30 min a game in the backup roll (but he's getting 8).

Mobley is mobley... he was nice and his value can still be salvaged as long as he doesnt play 40 min a game

We could go on forever... i think we're arguing over how the team got mediocre but we agree that something's gotta change.

Can we start a new thread here? How about the fact Cassell is campaigning for a job (down the road) as the Clips head coach? I'm fine with Dunleavy, but when he eventually leaves, Sam I Am would bring a fire this team (and many others) sorely needs. And unlike Avery Johnson, he dictates with a smile -- something players always appreciate.

DTS should move MD to GM and dump Baylor (have him be a scout or something). MD is more of a businessman than Baylor and he was the first to convince DTS to spend big money.

Second, go get a real coach like Van Gundy. Heck, if he can still walk and talk, get Hubbie Brown out of retirement one more time.

Third, get a really good point guard if at all possible. Arenas is not a true point. SL ain't going to cut it and never will. He was a worse draft pick than mobley was a free agent. I might try B Davis and take the risk despite age and injury proneness.

Fourth, re-sign EB.

Fifth, get Kaman to continue his neurofeedback to keep his ADD under control.
