The Thing About Maggette's Contract

There seems to be a swell of support for a Maggette trade in these parts. But here's what advocates for such a deal are missing: Unless you can get an expiring contract in return, you're saddled with more payroll going into a fine free agent class this upcoming off-season. If Maggette walks, you get something far more valuable than a body -- $7.8 million in cap space. The Clips can go shopping in the offseason, and they can be less nervous about adding Elton's max deal going forward, provided he wants to re-sign with the Clips.

If you can squeeze a late 1st round pick out of some team that thinks that they can get over the hump with Corey, then you're in business. Through all his faults, Maggs still has value.
The biggest positive of trading him now is that Al Thornton will get to play NOW.
And if not, you let him walk. Heck, i'd cheer him when he came back in another uniform.
