Dissecting the Side-Screen Roll Since 2006

Turns out that Henry Abbott composed a scouting opus of Samb during the 2007 Summer League in Las Vegas.  Abbott got impressions from both an anonymous scout as well as Joseph Treutlein of DraftExpress.com.  The first scout had this to say about Samb’s potential:

Cheikh Samb needs to put on a lot of muscle. He has bulked up some, but he needs to bulk up even more. The way he is right now, everything he gets is a fadeaway, and you can’t live on fadeaways.
That said, he has developed a decent jump hook, spinning into the lane.

Scouting Samb

Roundball Mining Company offered this scouting report on Cheikh Samb last month:

Cheikh Samb - C – 7′1″ 240 lbs (Updated 12/22/2008)

Offense:  Cheikh Samb is a raw player, but he already has an NBA quality offensive skill and that is a very nice outside shot.  Despite his height and lack of experience he has good mechanics and a consistent release.  The rest of Samb’s offensive game hinges on drive and dish plays and offensive rebounds.  He does not have a post move to speak of yet, but he does have good hands and his quality jump shot displays a willingness and ability to learn.  He also has shown an ability to pass out of the post, but he has very limited ball handling abilities and if he puts the ball down in traffic usually does not have it for long.

Clippers Acquire Cheikh Samb

Posted by Kevin Arnovitz On January - 5 - 2009

In their effort to acquire a center corps composed exclusively of former Denver Nuggets, the Clippers acquired 7-foot-1 Senegalese center Cheikh Samb from Denver on Monday for a conditional second-round draft pick.

Samb was drafted by the Lakers in the second round of the 2006 Draft — 17 picks after Paul Davis.  He was immediately traded to Detroit, from whom he was loaned back to WTC Cornellá, his former team in Spain.
