Dissecting the Side-Screen Roll Since 2006

Take Melo to the paint, Rasual

Posted by Breene Murphy On February - 10 - 2011

Everyone wants a piece of Carmelo Anthony right now, they want to know where he’s going, with whom he’d sign an extension. Considering New York is a very likely destination for Carmelo, it’s no surprise that last week the New York Times wrote a piece on Carmelo. Jonathan Abrams examined more than just the likelihood of each of the prospective locales, he delved into Carmelo’s youth and ran across another player that Clipper fans will recognize, Rasual Butler.

Clippers 2010-11 Unpreview

One of my favorite movie lines of all time is in Bottle Rocket, during a scene where Owen Wilson is trying to convince Luke Wilson to join in a planned heist. “Here are a few of the ingredients,” he says, ticking off elements of the plan on his fingers. “Dynamite, pole vaulting, laughing gas, helicopters…can you see how incredible this is going to be?!?” The joke, of course, is that it’s a terrible plan — long on pole vaulting, short on logic. The Clippers enter the 2010-11 campaign with a new coach, a new general manager and a whole bunch of new parts, including last year’s top overall draft pick, the Completely Cleared for All Basketball Activities Blake Griffin. And the question is: Has Neil Olshey put together a workable plan or will it be another season of laughing gas and helicopters?

Yes, that’s what you think it is, Blake Griffin on the reverse jam. Considering the agony of last year, it’s comforting to see that he is completely healthy. Earlier in the week, Craig Smith tweeted that Blake was as strong as Karl Malone and as athletic as LeBron. I think that’s a bit hyperbolic, but only a bit.

Clippers sign Rasual Butler

The Clippers have brought back small forward Rasual Butler on a one-year deal. Financial terms of the contract have yet to be released.

Butler was sort of the forgotten man this offseason. He was drawing interest from teams around the league, and most expected him to bolt to a contender, so this signing comes as a bit of a surprise. Butler will serve the role of stop-gap at the three again this season while Al-Farouq Aminu adapts his skills to the NBA setting. Despite not shooting a terribly high percentage from beyond the arc, Butler did set the Clippers record for most three pointers made in a single season.

The Clippers, Draft Position and Wesley Johnson

The recent swoon has had one unintended benefit:

The Clippers have quietly moved into the No. 8 position for the June draft. This morning, they stand only one game behind Philadelphia for No. 7, and two games behind Detroit for No. 6.

What does this mean?

So far as odds of winning the lottery, the bump is negligible. The No. 8 position has only a 2.8 percent chance of winning the lottery. But the Clippers’ reverse rise in the standings means that a couple of players who wouldn’t be available at the No. 10 slot — where the Clippers resided for the better part of the past month — will now be on the draft board.
