Dissecting the Side-Screen Roll Since 2006

Telfair and Thornton Traded

Posted by D.J. Foster On February - 17 - 2010

From Adrian Wojnarowski’s Twitter:

“Cavs get Jamison and Telfair, Clippers get Drew Gooden and Washington gets Illgauskas, Al Thornton and Brian Skinner and Cavs 1st round pick.”

Here’s how the trade looks on ESPN’s Trade Machine.

Drew Gooden’s contract expires at the end of this year. By making this move the Clippers avoid the chance of Sebastian Telfair activating his 2.7 million dollar trade option for next year and also get Al Thornton’s 2.8 million off the books as well.

Sebastian Telfair Out At Least 4-6 Weeks

From the Clippers’ release:

Los Angeles Clippers guard Sebastian Telfair suffered a right groin strain and torn right adductor longus tendon in the Clippers victory over Chicago on Jan. 20. The diagnosis was confirmed when Telfair was examined by a specialist, Dr. Craig Smith, in Los Angeles earlier today.Telfair is expected to miss a minimum of four to six weeks.

In 39 games played this season, Telfair has averaged 4.3 points and 2.9 assists in 14.3 minutes per game.

Eric Gordon Questionable for Tonight

Posted by Kevin Arnovitz On January - 21 - 2010

Gordon, who suffered a sprained left big toe last night in the win over Chicago, is listed as questionable for tonight’s game at Denver.

The Clips will be without Sebastian Telfair, who is back in Los Angeles getting treatment on his strained groin.

If neither is able to play, the Clippers would be extremely short-handed in the backcourt, with only Mardy Collins and Ricky Davis available off the bench as perimeter players. Expect Rasual Butler to slide over to the 2, with Al Thornton at the 3 in the starting lineup. In 219 minutes, this unit has not played well together, with a net -31, an offensive efficiency rating of 100, and a defensive efficiency rating in the neighborhood of 108-109.

Portland 103, Clippers 99

The Clippers post an efficient offensive game — one that would have been exceptional if not for the bevy of offensive miscues, sloppy interior passes, a series of botched shots at the rim, missed free throws, and offensive rebounds that slide off the Clippers’ fingertips. Still, they use their length and side-to-side movement to create plenty of shots for themselves. It’s their atrocious defensive effort against a Portland team without a legitimate center, and that loses LaMarcus Aldridge midway through the first quarter, that produces one of their least satisfying losses of the season.

Clippers 91, Minnesota 87

This was nothing more than a glorified rec league game. This isn’t said to insult the talented players who suit up for both the Clippers and Timberwolves, or the coaching staffs of either team. Surely there were many displays of athleticism shown on the court tonight that you will never see at your local gym. Still, like many a rec league team, the Clippers coasted throughout the game because they had already subconsciously decided they were far superior in talent, and as such were incapable of losing. Misguided confidence in tow, the Clippers sleep-walked through the first stages of the game, looking like a team that was struggling to find the motivation to do the little things against an inferior opponent. Sometimes, like in both New Orleans games, this mindset and lack of effort can create a hole too deep to crawl out of. Tonight, the Clippers got bailed out by a few superb individual performances, and the over-pressing play of an anxious and inexperienced Timberwolves team with the game on the line.
