- Saturday was a busy day in Playa Vista. Sofo Schortsanitis was at the facility in the morning working out, then Mike Miller paid a three-hour visit. Prototypically, Miller is precisely what the Clippers are looking for — a floor-spacing shooter who won’t kill them on the boards. He’s a guy who can assume the starting slot at the 3 while Al-Farouq Aminu develops, then move to bench as the Clips’ gunslinger at 32.
Here’s the problem: The market has gone insane. In a world where Rudy Gay is a max player, where Amir Johnson can score a 5-year/$34 million deal and Darko Milicic is valued at 4 years and $20 million, a guy like Miller can command a big number — larger than the Clippers are comfortable committing to a middle-age SF whose skills are likely to fall off during the back end of his deal.

More on Sofo and the Clippers
Sources close to the situation confirm that Greek center Sofoklis Schortsanitis will be visiting with the Clippers in Los Angeles in what can best be characterized as a meet-and-greet. The trip is primarily an opportunity to introduce Schortsanitis, whose NBA rights belong to the Clippers, to Los Angeles and the organization’s principals.
Several contractual and financial issues to consider:
- Schortsanitis is under contract with Olympiacos through the end of the month.
Sofo to meet with Clippers?
According to sportnet.gr:
“Big Sofo will be travelling to Los Angeles to meet with the administration of the LA Clippers. The Clippers own his rights in the NBA, selected in the 2nd round (34th overall) of the 2003 NBA Draft. Schortsanitis already has tickers to L.A. and the Clippers notified Olympiakos of their invitation to the player. It wasn’t necessary though because Schortsanitis will be a free agent at the end of this month when his contract ends. The article says that the Clippers are not going to use him in the Las Vegas Summer League team unless he signs with them first. Another source, says that they are already planning to show him some houses where he can stay in LA.”
An Update on Sofo
The lone overseas Clipper, Sofoklis Schortsanitis, (or for the sake of my spell check, Big Sofo) is currently playing in the Greek A-1 League Finals with the rest of his Olympiakos teammates. In the video below you’ll see a little bit of what Sofo can do on the court, and get a peek at a former NBA player that’s out there on the market. Hint: It’s the guy with the giant afro.
But what you’ll mostly see is a huge reason for Sofo to finally make his way overseas. Yes, the crowds in Staples aren’t nearly as supportive, but foam fingers are a lot less dangerous than what transpired in this particular game. Check out the video below:

I can tell the morale around these parts is a little low…getting blown out by the Warriors will certainly do that to you. I think I’ve got something that might cheer you all up though. Courtesy of Citizen Ming over at ClipsNation, here’s a ten minute montage of our favorite Greek center absolutely wrecking house. Don’t have time for the whole thing? Skip ahead to about the 8:30 mark and have yourself a good laugh. Go ahead. You deserve it.
