Before each home game this season, ClipperBlog will run “ClipperBlog Eats,” a restaurant recommendation from its resident restaurant reviewer, Ben Mesirow. Below is today’s suggestion:
Mexicali Taco & Co.
Mexicali Taco & Co. originally appeared one night in an empty parking lot at First and Beaudry, just a grill and a cutting board lit by two floodlights plugged in to a pickup truck’s whirring battery. The asphalt underfoot and the skyscrapers in the background seemed the perfect setting for their unique antojitos—pungent garlicky Vampiros and crunchy Cachetadas, meaty Zupermen and immaculate tacos.
As their star burned brighter, stoked by their outstanding flame-grilled carne asada, they were eventually able to set up their own brick-and-mortar location, a happy little room on Figueroa just North of downtown, right before it gets swallowed up by the 110.
Inside there are five bright red picnic tables, four excellent salsas lined up at a bar, two giant jugs of aguas frescas—typically one horchata and one fruit-based—and one silhouetted cutout of Baja mounted on the near wall. Order your meal, collect your salsas, take a seat and relax; when your food arrives and you take that first overlarge bite of an asada cachetada you’ll know—no matter the result of the game, you’ve already won.
