Before each home game this season, ClipperBlog will run “ClipperBlog Eats,” a restaurant recommendation from its resident restaurant reviewer, Ben Mesirow. Below is today’s suggestion:
You can’t throw a rock in this town without hitting some faux-ambitious gastropub with buzzword-powered organic free-range local seasonal burgers dressed in played out fusion toppings, a trend-jumping shrug of a beer and cocktail list, and a paint by numbers modern industrial spare reclaimed wood and exposed brick interior, as if someone wrote a killer press release in 2009 and is still building restaurants off of that copy.
Plan Check is not one of those places. For one thing, their eponymous burger kicks serious ass – it’s legitimately unusual without being gimmicky, a textural wonderland of house-made pickles and dashi cheese, schmaltz onions, and ketchup leather. There’s also their fried chicken sandwich, a smoky, spicy crowd pleaser in its own right. The cocktails are innovative and worth drinking – their use of ingredients like lavender water, smoked salt, and balsamic vinegar is more than shtick – and their happy hour is excellent. If you can make it before six you’ll have access to cheap beer, cheap wine, cheap cocktails, and a selection of food not found on the usual menu. Come see what those little gastropubs wish they were, and when you’ve had your fill you can actually—gasp—walk to Staples, if you’re so inclined.
